I did replace the needle as a matter of course/ But the needle can only be installed with the flat side against the needle holder

I have tried these things. I replaced neeedle and its positioned correctly I did try to lower needle but it hits the under mechanism. The bobbin/bottom tension needs adjusting and I need instructions on how to do this. It has a self winding bobbin and no "case" to adjust. This is a Singer Futura II 920 sewing machine

Hi beelermary,
Do you replace the needle with same type as what you used before? If the needle fitted in reverse way it can't catch the thread from the bobbin, re-insert the needle again and turn it 180 degree from its original position.
Hope I helped you.
Have a nice day!
Thanks for using Fixya.

Mu Singer Futura II model 920 hand wheel seized up-it will not turn. any ideas?

Turning towards you? that is correct. It could be something else that is wrong, like needle hitting the plate, thread jammed etc...and you think it is the handwheel when the handwheel is just not turning reflecting something else. What I always do is take everything out and off...bobbin, bobbin case, feed dog plate, etc...and even remove the needle. Take your brush and get every last bit of lint out of the areas it might be. Something is hung up. When you put your needle back in, make sure it is up all the way, and use a new one. Maybe this will help, but if not, call Singer or take it somewhere as it might be a simple fix.

How do you adjust the stitch length

Did you get your answer yet? There are dials on your machine...the one on the lower right near the bottom of the machine is the length dial. You need to get yourself a manual if you don't have one. You can email me if you want more info, good luck!

Jc penny model 1710 sewing machine, the stitching isnt tight

You do not say if it is the top stitches or the bottom stitches for the bottom tension, check that the thread is tight around the bobbin. Make sure that the bobbin is in the right way around - the bobbin thread should double back on itself coming out of the bobbin holder. The bobbin tension adjustment is the small screw in the plate on the bobbin case that the thread passes under as it comes off the bobbin and goes out.
For the top stitch, tighten up on the tension adjustment on the front of the machine which looks something like this:-

I have a Janome 8048. Here's my problem: As I sew I notice that the stitches on the top of the fabric look the way they should on the bottom side and when I take the material off the machine and flip it...

I haven't sewn in years. A sewing machine has a tension control on top and on the bobbin. If the intersection of the top and bottom threads is not in the middle of the sewn material, you have to adjust your tension.
In your case, what I think you are saying is that the stitch on top is just a straight line and on the back it disappears into the fabric.
To correct this, lower the top tension by loosening the tension adjuster on the thread where the thread loops around the small pulley.
Also, you could tighten the tension on the bobbin by slightly tightening the small screw on the side of the bobbin.
