It could be a build up of sludge on the inside wall of the liner. To get to it you have to remove the tub. I cleaned mine with a puddy knife. It was a waxy nasty sticky mess all stuck to the inside of the plastic tank liner. To do this job you need to be handy with tools.

I had one of the first Neptunes. At that time they offered a "free" service call and replaced the seal on the door with one that had a little drain hole in it. If you already have that check to make sure it isn't clogged with hair and debris. I had so many service calls on mine that I eventually had to have it hauled off and bought a Sears ( which I am now having problems with! )It was a costly mistake to buy the first Neptune. You can try leaving the door open a bit as my friends who still h ave later model Neptunes ( the electronic control models didn't seem to have the same problems)tend to do that. Most of my friends whom I convince to buy Neptunes have had to replace them in a short time. The class action suit I registered for only allowed you to buy a top loader and was only 200 bucks, I beleive. As water is a precious resource I opted to buy another front loader.

Odor from your towels or clothes washer?

With newer higher efficiency washing machines flooding the market today, new issues arise. One annoyance is odor of mildew on towels or coming from the front load or even top load machines.

With a little maintenance and care this trouble can be eliminated and avoided in the future.

If you currently have the odor locate one of the following products

- Affresh
- Smelly Washer

Run the hottest cycle without clothes and the product you chose. If the washer is especially bad you may need to run a second clean out using another dose.

After the washer is clean be sure you only use the recommended detergent for your product. HE detergents are required for most all front loading machines and a lot of new top loading machines too. This is very important, because if the wrong type is used it can cause build up in hidden areas that will cause odors as well as performance issues and even premature failures of components.

Do not use any additives that are not recommended for your machine, check with the manufacturer or owners guides for specifics.

Leave the lid or door open at least partially when not in use, this will move air through the unit to help keep odors away.

Use the Affresh or similar product once a month in the machine to keep anything from building up where you can't see.

I have a strange odor

It is normal for all models of washing machines to have a gallon or two of water left inside the bottom of the washer and in the drain pump. This is not the cause of odor. The smell is being caused by residue left on the inside of the plastic outer tub.

The best way to clean a stinky washer is to use a washer cleaner that is able to be used with clothing in the washer. The added bulk of the laundry will raise the water level to include the splash area 3-5 inches above the normal waterline. This splash area always has the worst buildup.
After the odor is gone you'll need to change washing habits to keep it away.

What type of odor? If it is a bad smell, have you been running the bleach cycle to clean the washer as per manual directions? If not I would try this. Dan

Odor when starting cycle

Check your water softener(If so equipped). This can cause foul odors in the water supply if not properly balanced or maintained. Good luck!
