Question about GE Â 17.9 Cu. Ft. Top-Freezer Refrigerator
Whirlpool ED22RF is making little or no ice after it was shut off for about an hour. ???
SOURCE: ice maker makes very little ice
You can't adjust it to make ice faster. It should make 8 cubes about every two hours. After it fills look and see how many cube molds are filled with water. It may be that the tray is not getting full. If it isn't filling the whole tray then you have a low water pressure to the fridge issue. The most common problem I see is people use a self-piercing saddle valve on the water line and they get plugged and this drops the water pressure to the fridge. If you have a self-piercing valve it needs to be changed to a drill type saddle valve. If the saddle valve is the correct one and the tray doesn't fill all the way then replace the water valve on the fridge. Let me know what you find.

Check condenser for dirt or dust, check back wall of freezer section for frost, if you find frost there is a defrost problem. Frost buildup on the surface of the back wall indicates that the coil inside the back wall is frozen over. Inside the back wall on the coil are heaters which the timer energizes to defrost at certain intervals. These heaters could have an open circuit, the defrost thermostat could be open, or the timer could be malfunctioning. To test the timer manually you can rotate the clutch head screw clockwise untill you hear one click. The heaters should come on and defrost for 18-22 minutes. The refrigerator should return to cooling after that time. If it does not automatically restart turn the screw once more to a second click and it should start.

If you have the type of ice maker that has an ice bin on the freezer door, then there are instructions available at www.AnyoneCanFixIt.com to fix the ice maker problem. They also sell the part that is sometimes required to repair this common problem on the ice maker. The problem is notorious on these refrigerators that were made around 2004 and later. The ice maker will usually go out within 1-2 years. They have redesigned a part to eliminate the problem.

I had a Whirlpool Model GD5SHAXNS in which the icemaker quit working about the same time (3 years old). I had water out the dispenser, I found that it was the icemaker itself failed not calling for water to fill it. I replaced it with a icemaker on-line for about $100 and problem fixed. I have been told his is a common problem with the icemaker in this model ref.

On the ice makers on refridgerators unless the ice in the bucket is high enough to raise the arm on the icemaker it will not shut off. Most people lift the arm up when they see the bucket full. I have the side by side Whirlpool model and on mine if I don't raise the arm the ice will fall out the bucket before it will raise the arm high enough.

Is the freezer cold enough? Should be close to 10 degrees.
Is there water or ice in the ice mold? If not put water in it and see if it dumps the ice after it’s frozen. If there is ice, lift the cut off arm and let it drop to see if it will start.
If it does dump the ice but don’t refill with water.
Try swapping the wires on the dual water inlet valve. Then try the water dispenser. The water should go to the ice maker. This will tell you weather or not the ice maker valve is working and if the line is clear.
The water inlet valve on the back of unit opens when the ice maker needs water. If the valve doesn't seal good because of sediment or wear it will continue to drip and when the water reaches the ice maker supply tube it will freeze. You can take the water line off the valve and watch to see if it drips.

Tips for a great answer:

refrigerators are made by Whirlpool and what you have happening is common with a
couple possibilities. Most likely the W10245167 Water Inlet Valve
is not shutting off after the fill time of about 7.5 seconds. If this is
happening the water will slowly fill the
ice maker tray above the lever that it should and causes the ice to connect together
on the top thus not allowing the cubes to be harvested because they are
basically welded together as a whole piece. And the other possibility is the
ice maker itself is needing an adjustment of the water flow time. Below I will
post a Icemaker
Repair video telling how to adjust the
time and other things to look for. This is possible but most times not always the case. Adjusting the flow time is
delicate and a little change can cause too much or not enough water. Lets watch
the icemaker a little closer and see if there is ice freezing up in the fill
tube behind the ice maker. You have seen the leaky faucets before and an old W10245167 Water Inlet Valve
can do just that making a mess inside your freezer and ice maker if
leaking. Here is a Whirlpool Ice Maker
