Question about Gaggia Classic Espresso Machine

1 Answer

Hi. When the 1-cup or 2-cup filter is in, and the machine is set to run, the water comes through the delivery spout in a steady stream for about 2 seconds and then sprays water (espresso) and steam perpendicularly out of the spout. This happens whether or not there are espresso grinds or not. I have tried to release a possible air lock etc. but it seems the issue is with the cup-filters. Too, when I release the filter I find that a lot of water is caught in the filter. I've only had the macine a few weeks! Any advice would be much appreciated.

I can try and help you get this figured out1st thing i would try is to start a shot without the portafilter in the machine. does water come through the screen, or is there literally steam coming through, or both. i have a feeling your either not putting enough coffee in the portafilter (basket) and/or the grind is not fine enough. it should take about 23-33 seconds to get a total of 1 1/2 oz of espresso. let me know if this helps, brian

Thanks for responding so quickly! I have tried it without the basket in place and water and steam come through the machine. I don't think its the coffee, because this happens with or without coffee in the basket, but only when the filter is in place (when there is no filter, the water runs through quite smoothly). That said, perhaps there is too much water coming through, as once the machine is turned on it immediately starts to spurt espresso (even with the filter in place). Thanks again for your help

If Steam is spraying out through the grouphead( where the portafilter sits. That probably means the water pressure is to high. See if you can find a way to turn it down. 9bars is standard but home machines vary sometimes. Check the manual.

This is similar to my Saeco. i only drink black coffee so the steam function is very rarely used. When i went to use it recently got same as your description. this then set a 'blocked' code on computer which meant NO COFFEE! EEEKKK.
I used an old soft drink bottle as a resevoir to operate the machine with covers off so i could see an issues. I started at the filter , blew that out with compressed air. then hoses...do 1 at a time ...tank to filter, filter to pump, pump to heat exchanger, heat exchanger to spout (watch this one as it is steam!)
after a thorough strip and assemble i descaled and was good to go. now i make sure to use steam at least once a month.

Starbucks Saeco Italia Digital Barista Fully Automatic Coffee Machine will not prime!

Here is what is said in the manual:

"Direct the steam arm on the drip tray.
Open the steam/hot water knob until a
steady stream of water is dispensed. Close
the knob. Insert the filter holder into the
brew head to pre-heat the filter holder.
The machine is now ready to dispense
coffee."

Leak whenever I make a cup of coffee

Hi,

Please consider the following:

1. Descaling (Machine should be descaled every after 3 months, every 500 brews, every time the machine prompts you to do so..(whichever comes first)..)

2. Lubricate the brew unit / Clean the brew unit with running water

3. Run hot water through the nozzle / Run how water only through the spout (to check clogs)

~ if above mentioned are no good, contact the customer service for the nearest ASC

As the coffee is dispensed, it is normal to have some residue left in the tubing and spouts. It is the reason that the machine will require cleaning on a regular basis using the Jura tablets that dissolves the coffee film. In the case the spouts get clogged, the best approach would be to dismantle the spout assembly. Since it may not always be possible, I found that filling a cup with a coffee cleaning solution such as Puly Cleaner (pulycleaner.co.uk) and having the spout dip in the solution overnight can help. Probably that dissolving a Jura cleaning tablet in a cup of warm water would provide similar cleaning power.
Dismantling the spout is rather straightforward. You start with removing the front logo by rotating it counter-clockwise. Behind it you will find a T15 Torx screw. Removing it will allow removal of spout cover by pulling the top part lightly towards you and then sliding it down below the spouts. Grab the spouts by the sides and wiggle downwards until it comes loose. You can now clean the spouts but will most likely need to soak it. My keurig only brews 1/2 a cup of coffee. I've cleaned everything and there is no clogs, but still only 1/2 a cup. I have only had the coffee maker one month.

The next time you go to brew a cup, open the lid to the water well and locate the little clear rubber spout that sticks out of the side of the machine toward the top. When you brew the cup watch the spout to see if water is coming out of it into the water well. If it is you can just put your finger over the hole and the machine should brew the whole cup.

I usually only have to do this once every time the problem starts happening, but it is clearly not a permanent solution. I assume the problem is with a valve inside the machine or something, and to fix it permanently you should probably get the unit serviced or exchanged under manufacturers warranty.

It's all plugged with 'lime scale'. That's the white stuff that builds up from hard water. Regular vinegar run through at least two cycles will clear it, then a couple with fresh water to rinse it. That will bring it back to normal flow!

Have cleaned the brew unit and the machine still does not work

If you are holding the brew unit in you hand look at the top you will notice a small knob with grooves, if you look to the bottom of that knob about 3-4 inches inside the unit you will see the screen. If it is no noticeable run water from the faucet over the brew unit.

Both spouts seem clogged

I have a Jura Impressa F7 that had the exact same issue. To solve it was pretty simple. Try and make a cup of coffee, and while the machine is trying to pump the coffee thru the spouts, grab the chrome handle on the spout and vigerously move it up and down rapidly. You should notice small grounds of coffee dislodge and follow the stream of coffee into your cup. If you do this a couple of times, you will be able to clear the trapped grounds within the spout. Hope it works for you as well as it worked for me.

Spidem Divina - one cup and 2 cup lights flash together

Hi
Caution light usually means something is out of place. Nothing will work until everything is in place and locked.
Steady water light means it needs to be primed, (run water by opening the steam knob). It won't heat until the boilers are primed.
