If the message is referring to different blocks and you see this message a lot your hard drive may be failing. You should probably make sure you have all your important data backed up.

If it's the same block and you don't see this message a lot you may be able to fix it by opening "My Computer" (on Windows XP or older) or by to going to Start (or the windows icon in the lower left of your screen) and clicking "Computer" on Windows Vista or 7. Right click the hard drive thats giving you problems and choose "Properties" click the Tools tab at the top and under "Error-Checking" click the "Check Now" button. Make sure "Automatically fix file system errors" is checked and click start. If the disk is in use you'll have to schedule a check. Restart your computer to make it do the scheduled check now.

After your system has been checked the error message should go away. If you keep getting errors your hard drive is probably failing. In that case backup all your data asap.

A soft (software) hard disk error means that there is a problem with the partition on the hard disk that the windows file system is installed on. Basically, the Windows installation has gotten corrupted somehow. Either something is wrong with the master boot file, a rootkit (form of malware) has messed up the boot process or there are errors in the NTFS filesystem. The way to go about fixing this is to stick in a Windows disc and run the recovery console, then running chkdsk via the command "chkdsk /f" or "chkdsk /r". If you don't have a Windows disc, find someone that does or take your computer to a shop where they will have one for sure.
Good luck.

Ah, also, the command "fdisk /mbr" command can also be used to re-write the master boot file.

"Thanks... So i don't need to buy a new hard disk i need to back up the files and start over?"

Yes, I recommend backing up files first, and attempting to fix the error before doing something like reformatting or replacing the hard drive.

A spot on the hard disk had a file needed for booting. The file was corrupted for any one of a bunch of reasons. Back luck is most likely. but could be that you thumped the notebook or just an errant alpha particle.

The boot sector is corrupted.

You should have a "hidden" partition that is accessible by a function key on start up...what model?

You need to repair the operating system...which is ?? win 7 ? assuming new 8 mo. ago.

Do you have a DVD player available and a source OS DVD/CDrom?

If only player then can you download and burn a disc? need more info at this point.

A softdisk error 301 means the hard drive is failing it is common on hp and compaq laptops ( hp owns compaq) unfortunately you are screwed to say the leas the hard drive is failingt. BUT you can save your data by hooking up an external hd and running ubuntu live cd to boot and copy any files you need from your hard drive over. you can download ubuntu from ubuntu.com and download and burn the live cd then you will need to set via ur bios when you boot i think its f2 or del key to get into the bios then go to boot order and select cd dvd drive to boot b4 cd then boot into the ubuntu disk and copy your files.

Softdisk does not necessarily mean that the drive is failing. It just means that there's a problem with how the Windows partition is booting up. However, it is a good idea to back up data anyways, in the case that the 8-month old hard drive is somehow failing, a lemon from the factory or somesuch.

exacltly i thought i had wrote in the chdisk. win repair part as well but i didnt . i just did some research on that error message and almost all came back on hp and compaq failing drives. not corrupted o/s thats why i jumped the gun on that.

I turn my computer on, it shows the dell startup screen and then goes strait to a blank screen, no cursor nothing. when i try start in safe mode, and push F8 it beeps. Please help

Well what i can figure out is that your OS is not being loaded, thats the primary issue because of which you are getting a blank black screen and there can be 2-3 reasons why it is not being loaded.
1. Issue with the Hard drive
2. Issue with the RAM disk
3. Issue with BIOS

Here is some troubleshooting you can do :

At the system start up press Pause and check to see if POST has succeeded for all the hardware devices. If it is failing for any device that means that device is not getting powered on so you have to fix that first.

If it succeeds then you need to check our BIOS, at the DELL Stratup screen press F2/F12 (what ever works on your system) to enter BIOS menu. If it is entering that means BIOS is also ok.

So now you need to check your RAM and Hard Disk so for that try booting up from a CD, if it boots from CD and is going to installation screen then it means that your RAM is also perfectly fine and there is something wrong with Hard drive because of which BIOS is not able to locate MBR on the hard disk and so is unable to load OS.

It generally happens if there are some bad sectors on the hard disk so For that you can perform Disk Checking on the hard disk. Disk checking will repair the soft errors on the HD if any but if there are Hard errors which means if some sectors are damaged permanently then you can't anything and have to purchase a new HD.

Hope it helps you.

Plz vote and comment if you like the soluition.

Thanks !!

Boot disk failure no hard disk found

The error means that your system is not able to detect the hard drive on the system, check if the hard drive wire connections are tight and not loose and then try rebooting the system.

Look for hard drive stats on POST whether it succeeds or fails. This is how you can do that.
When system boots up, press the PAUSE?BREAK on the black screen and see whats system comment for your hard drive power test. If it succeeds and your hard drive's connections are also tight then possibly your hard drive might have crashed ( which means there are bad sectors on the hard disk).

Try performing disk checking on the hard drive to see if there are any bad sectors on the hard disk, the disk check will automatically fix the soft errors but if the errors and hard errors in that case the disk checking utility will not automatically fix the errors and you will need to get a new hard drive.

Thanks !!!

I have compaq C772TU Laptop. The problem is that Its hard disk warms up in 3 minutes after startup and after some time it hangs and shows a blue scree error. Please help me out to resolve this problem....

If it has the blue screen error, try to turn off the pc, remove the power cable and battery. Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds. Reseat the cables and battery. turn on the laptop.

If Blue screen occurs, turn off the pc and reseat the Hard Drive. If it still occur, then that is the time to replace the hard Drive..

My Compaq Presario CQ50 laptop won't boot up. The compaq screen comes up then it just goes to a black screen with a cursor at the top. I tried to run Norton Internet Security 2010 but all it does is ask...

Try another hard drive in the system, sounds like the drive is going bad, then after replacing the hard drive, then go ahead and recover the system. Bad sectors on a hard drive can make it where it won't restore.

If you can get your hands on a windows boot disk, then you can try to format the hard drive, wiping it out and installing it can fix that problem as well.

I have a compaq presario C700, it loads up to a black screen with a white arrow and doesnt go any further. i performed a check and it said hard disk error, is there any way to fix this

Yes, my friend, there's a way to fix everything. This may sound too simple, but, try turning the unit on it's face and tighten every screw that you see on the bottom. This works for keyboard issues and harddrive ones also. This is a very common fix amongst laptops regardless of the manufacturer. Thank you, Dana

Error message: Failed- Replace Hard Disk 1 (Warrany ID error code 10008) what does this mean I have a compaq Presario A900

It means that Hard Disk 1, which is either the first or second harddisk in the laptop, has failed. First open the BIOS on your latop. Before windows startup there should be a Compaq logo on screen. There also is some text saying which key to press to access BIOS. In BIOS, try opening some menus and look for a menu that shows your disk drive. In the same menu should be your harddisk. If it is there, go to A. If not, go to B. A: The disk is not broken, it just made a write error that destroyed WIndows. Insert the disk with your operating system on it into the laptop, and reinstall it. Your data is gone, but the laptop will work. If reinstalling the OS gives errors, and is unable to complete, go to B. B: Your harddisk is broken. There is no way to fix it, and you will need a new one. Contact Compaq if your warranty is still valid, and if not, take it to the nearest computer shop and ask for a new harddisk. If you have any more questions or trouble just post back here. I hope this helps, Yannick

My Compaq Presario F700 dropped approximately 2 feet to the floor from on top of a suitcase at the airport. It was in a case, but not a thickly padded one. When I tried to use the laptop after the fall,...

Try reseating the hard drive and the RAM modules, the fall may have slightly loosen these components.
The error message "Operating System not found" means the laptop could not find the hard disk, this problem could be the hard drive needs reseating, a faulty hard drive (they don't like being dropped), or a faulty disk controller.
