1 Answer

OMG! Someone please tell me you have heard of this problem! I was completing work then when i turned on the laptop a few hours later, it boots up normally but won't open anything! no internet, not even my roboform so i can get my password to open my work site from another computer! If I don't get that password by midnight, i will lose $300 of work because my orders will be reassigned! I have never had this happen with any computer! lets meopen libraries (photos, etc) but won't open most programs, clicked on icons do nothing! no hourglass, nada..i am paniced that i have lost everything! I put it on hibernate and i normally put it on sleep, that is the only thing i did different. working on desktop now.

Sorry windows 7 home premium came preloaded

  • liveluvlaff Mar 14, 2011

Thank you so much! I ended up following your first suggestion since I didn't see your last instructions for Windows 7 until afterwards. Why would Microsoft's "critical updates" (this download occurred 2 hours before I put in hibernate) be screwing up computers like this? Is there anyway to prevent this from happening again?

    Thank you again!

Restart the computer in safe mode (procedure is given below)

Start the computer and keep tapping the F8 Key on top of the keyboard
You will be in advanced options menu,
use your up and down arrow keys on the keyboard and choose safe mode and hit enter.

In safe mode close if any window opens. You did not specify the windows version hence i am giving you generic steps, if you do not find a sub step, then please reply to this post.

Click on start - Click on all programs - click on accessories - click on system tools and then click on system restore (this will be used to restore your computer to a previous working setting (you will not loose any data with this). choose a date (couple of days back) when you are sure your computer was working fine and then follow the onscreen instructions. If this procedure is successful then your computer's settings will be reverted to previous settings and all your apps should start working fine.

Since it is windows 7 the procedure is click on start and type system restore and click on system restore listed above the search and then the remaining process remains the same

Some times the windows update might not be compatible, due to other softwares we have in our computer. You can avoid it by disabling automatic updates, but this will also stop good updates from coming through which safeguards your computer. I would recommend managing automatic updates . To manage please click on start and click on control panel and then open automatic updates (if you do not see automatic updates directly in control panel then click on System and security then click on windows update, in the left side click on change settings) there you can change it from automatic to "Download updates but let me choose whether to install them"

Recovery management never complete

A little late, but perhaps useful to others with similar problems. Did you have all peripherals disconnected (except mouse, keyboard and monitor)?
We had similar problems when trying to downgrade a Packard Bell PC from Windows 8 to Windows 7 (keeping a backup of all settings). We got stuck at 99% for hours, and we ended up downgrading including a reset of the settings (the other remaining option was completely reformatting the HDD). This recovery worked, but subsequently the PC would not fully boot Windows 7: it got stuck in an everlasting cycle of booting-rebooting.
It later turned out that a Netgear Wifi dongle had been connected throughout. When this was disconnected, Windows 7 booted normally... This may have been the reason for the recovery stall at 99% as well.

How do you switch off you laptop? Try this press and hold on the power button for about 5 seconds. So it won't boot to windows? When you turn on the laptop and you see the dell logo keep tapping on F8 then try booting in safe mode, if fails do F8 again then last known good configuration, if fails do F8 then startup repair, if fails do F8 then system restore, if all fails reinstall os. but before all these steps try to test hdd first. make sure laptop is off. press and hold on the Fn key then press power button. Run the PSA test and once it finish it will show you some errors code like 0142 -0146 means hdd needs to be replaced.

Boot/Startup repair problem

Microsoft updates do it again!!!
while the PC is booting up his F8 repeatedly, if it lets you into the sub menu boot into safe mode and perform a system restore, take the computer back to before you did the updates, if this works and your computer is restored, turn the automatic updates off

Did you charge it for up to 8 hours?

Caring for your Compaq Evo N400c Laptop Battery You can improve the life of your Compaq Evo N400c Laptop Battery by doing the following:
