Question about Car Audio & Video

1 Answer

Hi there i have just purchased two newer model type r alpine subs and a week ago i got a great deal on a rockford fosgate 800 a2 amplifier. The amp has two outputs and don't know exactly what ohms are at on the amp when hooked up using both channels. the subs are wired in series and wondering if i should bridge the amp? but what terminals would i then use to do that? also would it be running at proper impedence? If you could help me out it would mean alot. thanks, rob

If you bridge it i believe you run at 4 ohms instead of 8 even if the subs are wired together i would not bridge it for fear of blowing the subs. if you where to bridge it it would be the left channel on one terminal and the right on the opposite terminal. but i highly advise against bridging it as they are wired together. its running at the proper impedence NOT bridged.

I have one 12inch 1000 watt mtx sub what size amp should i buy

Hello taona80,

If the 1,000 watts is RMS, I'd recommend an amp in the 750-1,000 watt RMS range, perhaps like the Alpine MRP-M1000 or Rockford-Fosgate T1000bd. If the 1,000 watts is peak power, the subs continuous (RMS) power handling is much lower, probably 300-400 watts. In that case, I'd recommend the Alpine MRP-M500 or Rockford-Fosgate T500-1bd.

Amp makes noise. I am purchaseing a new amp

Hello termite440,

A mono amp will generally provide more power for subs. And for those Audiobahn's, you'll want something that will provide a minimum of 500-600 watts RMS to each, a least a 1000 watt amp. At the low end, something like the Alpine MRP-M1000 or the Orion HCCA-D2400 will provide 1000-1200 watts. I'd recommend the Alpine. For more power, and another $100, look at the Alpine M2000, or for another $250, the Rockford-Fosgate T1500-1bd.

Hope this helps.

Rockford fosgate 800 a2 amp power?

Hello desperate2le,

Watts delivered is a function of the voltage times the current. If the amp was 100 percent efficient, it would need 33 amps at 12V for 400 watts. At 14.4V, it would only need 28 amps. Of course, amplifiers are NOT 100 percent efficient, only about 50-60 percent in many cases, but somewhat higher for monoblocks, maybe 80-90 percent. So you're looking at a fuse in the 60-80A range. In the absense of a specific fuse size from the manufacturer, I'd start the primary fuse at a 60A and if the amp blows it on power up/immediately/frequently, move up to an 80A.

All of the Rockford-Fosgate 2-channel bridgeables I've ever seen show using the left positive (+) and the right negative (-) for bridging. But if it's not shown right on the amp, I'd call or email RF for the correct connection. The new amps do show it.

Hope this helps.

Sub hook ups

There's a lot more factors involved than that.
  • Power capability of the subs
  • Type/size of the sub box
  • Allotted space in the vehicle for the sub box
  • Voice coil impedance of the subs versus the capability of the amp
  • Etc.
