Two things here: First make sure the fan is working and pushing out air. Look and see how dirty it looks. Is it covered with lint? Are the intake openings which it draws air throught, likely on the bottom of the laptop, are they opened? Make sure you are placing the laptop on a hard flat surface and not on a bed for instance. It needs to get air movement.

2. Open up task manager (CTRL + ALT + DEL keys) and see what is running. Also look to see what processes are running. It will have a long list. Click the tab at the top of the column that tells amount and it will put them in order of most to least (if that is inverted click it a second time and it will be correct). Interest explorer uses a lot. What else is high on that list ? Is it something you are using? Also check to see what programs are 'running in the background'. That means that you aren't using them at the moment but they're still running waiting for you to say you need them now. They will be in the processes menu running...

3. ...then look and see what is in your STARTUP menu. If there's something you don't use frequently you can get rid of it. You don't need it running constantly in the background and can still pull it up when you do need it.

You maybe having a problem with the CPU fan. If it gets feeling really hot shut down the machine so you don't fry the cpu. It may need cleaning. If you think you'll blow it clean yourself be careful. Too often people blow dust/lint further in and clog it up worse when they use canned air etc.

A fan has failed, the unit is clogged with dust or a task is running the CPU/GPU at stressful levels.

If you are not confident opening and cleaning out a laptop yourself have a repair technician do it.

If the fan has failed it needs repair.

Run task manager (taskmanger.exe) to check to see if a hung process in a loop is causing the CPU/GPU to run at 100% all the time.

Replacing dvd/rw in a toshiba

Post the model number of the Toshiba Satellite Notebook PC

This can be found on the Bottom of the laptop.

Optical drives for laptops usually just slide out to remove, or silde in. There is an Interface 'block' on the motherboard they plug into.
Usually just one Philips head screw, on the bottom of the laptop; is what holds them in.

Awaiting model number, to give more specific info

While waiting, one example,

Toshiba satellite l505d-s5983 fan not running continuously

Overheating When the CPU overheats then it will shut down (i.e. thermal overload) and won't boot up again until it has cooled down. If this is the problem is not fixed then the CPU will eventually fail.
A faulty fan causes the problem or the fan and heat sink assembly are clogged with dust.
Check the CPU fan to see if it spins freely, if not replace the fan.
If the fan and heat sink is clogged with dust the remove the dust and make sure the vents are clear and dust free. Use a small brush and can of compressed air to do this.

Model: Toshiba Satellite Pro U400-S1001V. The Problem: The touch pad seems to be getting overheated after 30 to 40 minutes of use. Sooner if I play a movie. Please advise.

Most laptops have the hard drive under that area and it could be your hard drive overheating i would get a usb laptop cooler or replace the drive with a 5400 rpm drive so it runs cooler.

Hi,

It's difficult to determine the exact cause of the problem but from your description it would appear that the laptop CPU is overheating. This would cause it to shut down as a safety mechanism to prevent your CPU or other components from permanent damage.

The first thing you need to do is open the laptop or have it opened by somebody in the know.
There are inlet & outlet vents whereby air is sucked in over the CPU which helps to keep it cool. These vents have filters which become blocked by dust & other debris in the air.

Cleaning the dust from these filters often sorts out overheating problems.
If this is not helpful in your case, it would be advisable to have a technician do further tests to determine the problem

Best wishes,
Graeme

My Laptop crashes every 5 minuts, what can I do

Could be one of several problems.
  • Overheating, especially if laptop is set to less than max performance (check the inlet and exhaust vents are not clogged with dust and if you can get to the CPU assembly, see if the fan and heatsink radiator are free of dust build up.
  • Running programmes that are CPU intensive, if you can , upgrade the Ram, which will help, also possible that RAM is going bad, remove and test using a different module
  • Hard drive issues, possible overheating or beginning to near the end of its life. HDD tune (freeware download) will check the hard drive

Dynamic Switchable Frequency of CPU causing overheating

A small tip I have seen used was to glue 4 plastic bottle caps on to bottom of the unit using hot glue , this gave it a better air flow in and out from the laptop as many unit only have tiny rubber pads which don't allow the unit the air it needs to remain cool , with my laptops i always run a external fan as overheating is a problem on may models , you can also buy laptop stands that have fans incorporated in them that can run off a USB port as most laptops draw the air in from the bottom and out the back or side to expel it , the laptop stands force extra air in through the bottom and improve the temp a lot and are inexpensive .

My laptop keeps shutting down without any warning and sometimes when i turn it back on it will shut down again. My warranty is now up (as of 3 days ago) and i cant find any useful info. on what could be...

this could be an indication that you have an overheating problem. CPU or the processor generates heat, when there is a lot of dust accumulation in the cooling system, your system has a thermal protection that cuts off all electrical line throughout your system.
you need to send this to a technician. try to re-nogotiate with the warranty, sometime they will give some consideration. or else this will cost you around 150$

Toshiba satellite a205-S5847 cuts off while working

You could have an overheating problem, The CPU shuts down when it overheats and the laptop won't bootup until the CPU has cooled down.
The overheating problems are caused by a faulty fan or the heatsink/fan assembly is clogged with dust which prevents proper cooling.
Check the fan to see it it spins freely, if not (it has a bearing problem) then replace the fan. Also remove and vacuum the dust off the fan and heatsink.
