Question about Panasonic DMRES15 DVD Recorder
U61 is a common error code for this model of Panasonic DVD recorders. The DMR-ES15 is a 2006 model, and was known for faults. It quite possibly does not have a cooling fan inside it (this would be in later models to help keep the digital process board cool during disc operation); therefore the electronics overheat, even if the user provides adequate ventilation for the unit.
There could be a number of different factors which may produce such an error:
a dirty or faulty laser assembly;
an internal fault on the digital PCB;
a power supply issue - involving (but not limited to) several faulty components (including electrolytic capacitors);
a firmware issue;
a faulty DVD drive
(in other words, the actual cause may differ between machines but give the same symptoms, depending on the model)
I believe the most likely source of the error lies within the PSU, and it has affected the microprocessor during startup. This may not be economical to repair due to the age of the recorder.
You can submit this appliance to an authorised Panasonic service centre (regardless of whether it is under warranty or not), get a quote and a second opinion on the likely cause and repair/parts cost(s), then you can decide what to do from there; it's up to you.
