The message box is not full but no messages can be left if you call our number. The light for "on/off" shows that it is on. However, when I pres the "setup" button, it says the "ANNOUNCEMENT MONITOR IS OFF". How do I get it to go back on so our machine answers messages again. THANKS!

Shellylynch, you'd better delete your message and power cyble again after that.

Betinha52,your annoucement monitor is off, you need to follow the manual and turn it on.

"A" displayed and will not record caller's message

Your answering machine is set to "announce." In this mode it can announce that you're not available to take the call but will not record a message. The machine automatically switches to this mode when its memory is full.
If the memory is not full, you can switch from the "announce" mode to the "answer" mode by pressing the [ANSWER ON/OFF] button until it lights up in red.
If you need a manual, you may view one here.

Trouble shooting

You're in the Announce mode, where the machine plays an announcement but does not record a message. It switches to this mode automatically when memory is full. If the memory is not full, you can switch between the Announce and Answer modes by pressing the [ANSWER ON/OFF] button. You're in the Answer mode when the button lights up red.

How do i set the answering system on a uniden 1580-3 phone, mine is just background noise on the answering machine when someone calls in to leave a message

Here is the manual for your phone. You can download the manual and the instructions for setting up your answering machine are on page 43:

http://www.uniden.com/pdf/DECT1580-3om.pdf

Setting Up the Answering System
You can set up your answering system's features from the handset. Only one handset at a time can access the answering system menus.

Note: If you have multiple bases, select the base with answering system you want to access (see page 15).

Recording a Personal Greeting
Your answering system comes with a pre-recorded outgoing message or greeting that plays when you receive a call: "Hello, no one is available to take your call. Please leave a message after the tone." You can record your own personal outgoing greeting. Your recorded greeting must be between two seconds and thirty seconds long.

Press /mute. The system announces the number of new and old messages, then starts to play the messages unless it has no messages.

Press 5 to stop the announcements or message playback. You will hear intermittent beeps indicating that the system is in the command waiting mode.

Press 8 to start the recording. The system announces, "Record greeting." Begin recording after the announcement.

When you finish recording, press 8 again or press 5. You will hear a confirmation tone, and your recorded greeting plays back for you.

Selecting a Greeting

Once you have recorded a personal greeting, the phone automatically switches to your personal greeting. You can
also switch back and forth between the pre-recorded greeting and your own greeting at any time.

Press /mute. The system announces the number of new and old messages, then starts to play the messages unless it has no messages.

Press 5 to stop the announcements or message playback. You will hear intermittent beeps indicating that the system is in the command waiting mode.

Press 6. The system plays the current greeting.

My answering machine is displaying an A and won't let anyone leave a message on it. What should I do?

Your machine is set to the announce mode, where it only plays an outgoing announcement without taking any incoming messages. You want to switch it to the record mode, where it will record incoming messages. Since you declined to specify the model of your VTech system, I can't tell you how to switch it. I can only direct you to enter the model number into the search box here to download a copy of the manual.

CAN I CALL MY HOME FROM ANOTHER PHONE AND LISTEN TO MY MESSAGES.

Yes. Dial your telephone number. When the system answer, enter your three-digit access code during or after the announcement. The system announces the number of messages and begins playback. For full details, see the manual.

The machine says A where there should be number of messages it won't take messages

Your machine is set to Announce Only. In this mode the machine announces you're not available but does not allow the caller to leave a message. To switch to Answer, see the instructions beginning on page 30 of the manual: http://cdn-media.vtechphones.com/ecp/documents/product_Product/1249/UserManual/2839/vt2461_manual.pdf

Won't record message

Your machine is set to "Announce" instead of "Answer" mode. The announce mode merely plays an outgoing message but does not record any incoming messages.

Since you neglected to specify the model of your VTech 5.8GHz cordless system I can only suggest you enter it into the search box here to download the manual to learn how to switch modes.

Message center of GE Phone Mod. No. 29897GE1-A by ATLINKS USA,Inc

I wish I had a solution for you.  My Uncle has the same problem and the manual instructs to unplug/replug the machine and then reset the date and time.  He has done that for a while and now even that isn't fixing the problem.  I find this to be highly unacceptable.  I'm planning to get him another phone that WON'T be GE.

Record Your Announcement
Before using this answering system, you
should record the announcement (up to
three minutes long) that callers will hear
when the system answers a call. If you
choose not to record an announcement,
the system answers with a pre-recorded
announcement: “HELLO. PLEASE LEAVE A
MESSAGE AFTER THE TONE.”
1 Press and hold a. When the
system beeps, speak toward the
microphone normally, from about nine
inches away. While you are recording,
the Message Window blinks .
To stop recording, release a.
The system automatically plays back
your announcement.
To review your announcement, press
and release a.
To erase your announcement and
return to the pre-recorded announcement,
press Dwhile your announcement is
playing.
Callers can skip the announcement by
pressing #.
