You might need to double check to make sure this is made for a Mac, PC, or Both. You might need to have it formated from the Disk Management (assuming you are using a Windows computer) so your computer recognizes the hard drive.
Here is a link.

If this does not work then it is likely you have a faulty unit and should ask for a replacement.

No drive letter is assigned to a USB mass storage devise. it is recognised in devises and says it is working properly. A thumb drive works OK and is assesable. This as a 20GB external HD in a Centre X 2...

Well, you can manually assign the drive letter for the Drive. To do this, follow the instructions below:
Right-Click "My Computer" > "Manage" > on the left pane "Disk Management" > on the right pane check out which one is the drive that's not available with it's drive name, after it's located, right-click on the drive and select "Change Drive Letter and Paths" or "Assign Drive Letter", give any letter you want to assign and "Ok". Close the window and open My Computer, you'll be able to see the drive with the drive letter you just assigned. If it doesn't show up, restart your computer while the external hard drive is still connected to the system's usb port.
It's also important to try it on different usb ports or on another system to make sure there's not internal problem or connector/cable problem with it.

Good luck.

Thanks for using FixYa.

I have a Maxtor One Touch 4 Mini 120GB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive, I've previously used it multiple times in the past, importing AND exporting data. For some reason though after using it on one computer...

try testing it in another computer. if you have the same problem. then there might be an issue with the drive.

to recover your data. unplug external drive from the computer and open the external hard drive case. remove the hard drive inside. with you computer off and disconnected from the wall open the case to your computer. look and see how the hard drive inside is connected in your computer and add the external the same way. you might need a cable to connect it. you can simply disconnect the cdrom and plug the hard drive instead. make sure the external hard drive is not touching any electronics inside the pc. now you can turn on the computer. give the computer a minute to detect the new drive and assign a drive letter. navigate to my computer and select the newly added hard drive. copy and paste all the data you want to save. after everything has been backed up format the external drive to clear any bugs that may be causing it to be recognised in its case.

when finished remove the hard drive, plug in the cdrom, close the case, plug back into the wall, and return external drive to its case.

Try plugging the external Hard Drive to a different computer and see if it would recognize the device. If not, go the store where you purchased the external hard drive to have it replaced since it is still under warranty.

Usb devise not recognised

You probably damaged the drive from sudden disconnection of the signal line. I would suggest trying it on one other computer before considering it trashed.

When I plug in the HDD16 into the USB my computer says devise is not recognised

Please clean the usb cable. Use a cotton swab with Alcohol on it. (Not dripping). You may need to use a few. If that fails to help, try another usb device in your PC & check if the PC can see that device. The cable could be defective. The FAT on the drive could have been damaged or the drives file system could be corrupt. The usb port could be loose from plugging in & out. If your OS is Vista that can be the problem. Try a Pc running XP.
