If you are using component cables red green blue amke sure they are all properly connected and secure. A misconnection will definately cause the picture to be black and white.

In UK this occures when an NTSC picture is played from a DVD player to a TV which cannot enitrely hand NTSC format. Possible this will happen in the reverse for USA.
Also my TV cannot handle SVHS signals and also displays them in black and white.
Try changing settings on the DVD Player to Composite or RGB.
