Question about Refrigerators

Will not defrost

My Maytag side by side refrigerator/freezer will not go into it's defrost cycle. It starts getting warmer and warmer. we have to shut it off and let it set for a day or two. Clean the wter up then start it up , and let it run for a day then put every thing back in it.

The door on our Maytag MSD2351HE did not shut entirely two nights ago. The freezer stopped working. Any ideas?

Can you hear and feel the fan blowing in freezer?

Problem will normally resolve it self after a day or two of unit going through defrost cycle. Do you see frost build up on back lower wall of freezer? If so the frost build up is blocking airflow. A hair dryer could be used to defrost, remove back panel and shut off refrigerator. Reassemble and check again after a couple of hours.

Maytag side by side refrigerator - freezer side working ok but refrigerator side geeting warmer, have it all the way to the coldest setting 9 but it not getting colder seems to be holding around around 40...

you probably have a defrost problem. what you would see is frost on the rear panel of the freezer section at the back bottom.
this is common and you most likely need to replace the adaptive defrost control.
it is located inside the refr control box. you have to remove the cover and then the air housing with the lights attatched to it. once you have this housing down, then the "adc" is on the right rear and looks like a computer board.
dont try to figure out how it works, just replace it and then let the freezer warm up to remove the frost from the freezer coils. have a towel ready to pick up the excess water that will drip off the coil and onto the floor.it will take about 6 hours or so of being shut off.
after it has defrosted then turn the unit back on and with the new board it will start cooling properly again.

The freezer and refrigerator temp is becoming warmer.

The newest defrost feature in modern fridges is the electronic adaptive defrost control board. to put this adaptive defrost style of fridge into defrost, short with a small screwdriver between L1 and test on the adaptive defrost board, wait 3 seconds and you should hear a "click" noise from the relay and the fridge will shut off and go through a defrost cycle.

MAYTAG MZD2766GE SIDE BY SIDE

The freezer on top unit was keeping everything up top nice and cold, but the customer began to notice things in the fresh food section getting a little to warm. When the temperature selectors were adjusted to a colder setting, it seemed to help for a day or two, but then started getting warmer again. Sounding like a defrost problem, I paid this refrigerator a visit with hairdryer in hand, and parts in the van. Frost free refrigerators use a defrost heater to periodically assist with the melting of frost that builds up on the fins of the evaporator located in the freezer section. Frost forms each time the doors are opened to the unit, and the warmer, moist air from outside gets inside and heads toward the cold surface of the evaporator. As the frost continues to collect, the air passages in and around the evaporator start to close up and begin to prevent air circulation by the evaporator fan from the freezer to the fresh food section. As the cycle continues, the temperature in and around the evaporator will be cold, but the fresh food section will get warmer because warm air is not being exchanged with the colder air from above. The defrost sections of most units will consist of the same components. Namely, the heater itself, the bi-metal terminator, and the timer or defrost control. Each one of these components need to work properly for the defrost cycle to properly keep the unit frost free. On this unit, the timer could be advanced to begin a defrost cycle, but there was no current flow to the heater. After checking all connections and doing a quick resistance check of the circuit, I determined the bi-metal terminator had failed open. These bi-metal devices are used to prevent an overheating situation in the freezer section should the heater remain on to long. Once the trip temperature is reached, the bi-metal will open up a set of electrical contacts thus opening the circuit. Then when the unit cools back down to it's reset temperature, the contacts will again close, closing the circuit for the next defrost cycle. Because this bi-metal didn't reset, the circuit remained open and no defrosting took place. After using my trusty hairdryer and warm water squirt bottle to defrost the evaporator, I wired a new defrost terminator in line with the heater. With all the frost removed, the cold air started circulating again, and now everything within the fresh food section stays properly chilled.

Look for excessive frost build up in the freezer, there may be a problem with the defrost cycle.

Freezer/refrigerator

Refrigerators with an evaporator (called a humid plate on this type of refrigerator) in the refrigerator section are called a semi-automatic defrost. This means that the freezer section occasionally needs defrosting but the refrigerator section defrosts by a means called "heat leakage defrost". How it should work....
the cold control, (the electrical device under the dial), leaves the compressor off for long enough for the plate to melt off each cycle.
If yours is not melting off perhaps you have a faulty control or you have it set too high. hope this help

Freezer not working

Sounds like a defrost problem or a plugged drain... to get it to work temporary defrost the freezer. Unplug the refrigerator, open the door and get a blow dryer and warm up the freezer. wait until the water stop dripping out or about 12 to 24 hours and then you can plug it back in . it will work for 2 to 3 weeks.

To unplug the drain.defrost the freezer .remove the back cover. Use a pipe cleaner to clear the drain. pour a few cups of hot water down the drain.

The defrost systems is:
HEATER-DEFROST
THERMOSTAT-DEFROST
Adaptive defrost control
Start with the adaptive defrost control board. The fresh food section light switch and light bulb must work. To initiate a defrost cycle, open the door and push the light switch in and out 5 times within 6 seconds. The compressor and fans should shut off and the defrost heater should come on. Open the door and push the light switch in and out 5 times within 6 seconds to remove the refrigerator from the defrost mode and back into a cooling mode.
Frigidaire - referance model FSC23F7DSB3
This product comes equipped with an Adaptive Defrost Control (ADC). To activate manual defrost, press and hold the Freezer temperature UP (WARMER) key while pressing the Fresh Food temperature DOWN (COLDER) key 5 times within 6 seconds. A d in the freezer temperature window and F in the refrigerator temperature window will display when the heater is activated. To deactivate manual defrost, press and hold Freezer temperature UP (WARMER) key while pressing the Fresh Food temperature DOWN (COLDER) key 5 times within 6 seconds. d and F will be displayed until the defrost cycle is complete. (approx. 8 minutes)

Heater / Thermostat
You will have to remove the back panel of the freezer to check the heater for and thermostat for continuity. Heater are the lease likely part to go bad... I always change thermostat and timers together.
let me know if this helps or we can chat if you need more help.
