Question about Air Tools & Compressors

1 Answer

Just hooked up a U.S. General vertical 3 1/2 hp compressor and when I turned it on started to pump up the receiver. Between 40 and 50 psi the plastic tubing between the discharge line and the unloader ruptured. I cut the bad section out of the tubing and replaced the line, then the line ruptured again. Do you have any idea why this would happen?

Is it failing at the copper/brass fitting going into the tank (the tank check valve)? That area can be 250 degrees F or more during operation. Plastic, in my opinion is not acceptable here. I'd recommend getting some 1/4" OD copper refrigeration tubing and the appropriate compression fittings, and replacing the line.

T wo suggestions. 1- check the check valve located in top of the receiver tank by letting the unit pump up to 50 psi. shut it off and loosen the copper tube at the HP cylinder. if no air blows out the check valve is good. If it's bad it will blow until it empties the tank. If the check valve is bad replace it. 2- Tighten the drive belt. If neither corrects the problem remove the guard and rotate the pump by hand. If it's hard to rotate you have a pump problem.

It throws a breaker after barely even turning over. cover is off, everything seems to turn free. its a vertical.

sounds like it could be starting on load eg starting against a pressure, if you drain the receiver down will it start ok then, if so you probably have a faulty non return valve letting pressure back onto the head. If it is not that the capacitor on the motor could be faulty.

The compressor turned on pumped up and shut off and wont start up

Inccrease the line pressure to 90 PSI, a air ratchet is a very high volume air tool and the compressor may not be able to keep up with it.

that is just a compression fitting. Sometimes just replacing the tubing is enough to get a bit on it. If not you should be able to get another fitting from an indstrial supplier.

You are looking for about 5 H.P. to do that, but what is more important is the r.p.m. of the motor, the size of the pulley,,, and the size of the compressor pulley! most manufactures will spec the pump for certain horse power,,, they go hand in hand,,, for example you cannot take a pump designed for 5 H.P. and hook a 10 H.P. motor and a bigger pulley on it and spin the pump faster to make more air,,, it wont take that high of speed,,, I hope this helps.
