Question about Washing Machines

1 Answer

Washing machine goes through cycle to rinse, would fill in rinse cycle and sometime not agitate. Sometimes would not spin giving a "humming" sound. Now washer only seems to hum when set to spin and although the timer advances, nothing happens.

    Daniel,
Pulled washing machine apart and found the motor coupler intact. However, I could not rotate the motor with a screwdriver using the prongs of the coupler. I did get it to rotate, but squealed like a little pig as soon as I did that. I suspect the motor is the problem as it was probably stalled and was not enough horsepower to overcome the binding. This is probably why the problem kept getting worse over the last few weeks and eventually the pump wasn't working either. I believe this motor has sealed bearings, but am trying to lubricate them anyway. They both seem to be taking oil and has freed up substantially. Now I'm hearing what i believe to be the armature rubbing against the coils/stator and am concerned that the motor will self destruct. With what I found would the recommendation be to replace the motor? The motor coupler appears to be in good shape, but will replace that too since I have it apart now.
    Thanks for the help.

Daniel, Pulled machine apart and found the motor coupler to be okay, but the motor was frozen. Tried to rotate with a screwdriver on the coupler, but wouldn't turn without a lot of force. When turned it squealed badly. I oiled it and it freed up substantially. I believe the bearings are sealed, but oil is apparently getting in to the bearings. It also sounds like the armature is contacting the stator in a couple of spots in each rotation. If I get it freed up enough I'll run it for a while when waiting for a new motor. I'll replace the coupler since it's apart too.
    Thanks for the help.

Hi

This issue is due to broken motor coupler and you would need to replace the motor coupler. However, in some cases it could be a transmission or a bad clutch assembly as well. Please check this link for disassembly and motor coupler location. Please check this video as well---

Hope this helps... Please post back if you need more information.

Maytag SAV5910aww will not always drain. Fills and agitates fine but will go through entire cycle without draining. Will sometimes give end of cycle buzz sometimes not. If I am in the room and lift the lid...

"I have found spinning the timer back to begining of rinse cycle first helps". The timer only rotates clockwise; counterclockwise rotation can destroy it.

Incomplete wash cycle.

It sounds as if you have something acting as a flap causing the restriction. You should take the hose that leads from the tub to the pump off and see if there is anything just inside the tub. I have noticed that alot times you could have a coin that blocks the opening. You may have to remove the inner tub to remove anything in there

Whirlpool Washer will not progress to the rince cycle.

that is either a problem with the timer , or with the cold water hose at the back of the machine, see the following:

I quote from : The cycle doesn't advance

The cycle doesn't advanceWhen the cycle doesn't advance, it's probably the timer or a cold-water supply problem:

  • It'sthe timer, if your washing machine fills with water and beginsagitating, but the timer never advances--or if the washer is in a spincycle and the timer won't advance. Then you need to replace the timer.

  • Itmay be a cold-water supply problem, if the washing machine fills withwater, agitates, drains, and spins, but then doesn't fill with rinsewater. See There's no cold water.

gabehart....sounds like belt is slipping. Replace it. The water pump is on a separate smaller motor so is not affected by the agitator/spin motor.
