Frigidaire front load washing machine gtlf490e

The dang thing wont spin to ring out clothes. it will wash, then drain but all it does in spin mode is hummmmmm... i have replaced both main boards and checked for if something was clogged i ddint see anything what else could it be or am i not looking in the right spot? it does fine on the test mode .. it spins fast on the test mode . so i cant figure out why it wont do it in the cycle mode?? someone help me .. wont buy frigidaire again.. Replaced the tub assembly and the unit spun fine at the time.Since then, (within days of the repair) it has stopped doing the high speed spins and only does the slow speed rotations instead. I have tried to find a repair manual. I am a mechanical engineer and can do most repairs myself, but this one is an electrical control issue.

If is said that the door latch coil got really hot during the cycle would that mean something. A couple of times, I have (after unplugging the machine) reached down to see if a wire was loose and found the bottom plug was quite warm. My gut feel is that this shouldn't be happeneing. Also, sometimes the door won't open right away...the lock stays closed for a while... Does this all point to a faulty door lock mechanism?

Thanks for the updated comment. The issue here is that on all cycles, the final spin may or may not work. There is no gearbox because this is a direct belt drive from the motor which is attached to the bottom of the outer drum - so that won't be an issue. I suspect it is either a speed control board or a door latch issue. If it is a door latch issue, I just need to understand why the door latch problem would prevent it from doing the high speed spin.

    Thanks,

    John

My front load washer - Kenmore (Frigidaire) bought in Canada in 2002, manufactured Dec 2001, Model number 970C42070-00 (I assume 42070 series) will not do the high speed spin at the spin cycle. It will only do a low speed alternating directional rotation. This leaves the clothes wet and it takes a long time for them to dry. The pump works fine. The door solenoid seems to get quite hot but am not sure if this is a "red herring". How do I trouble shoot to determine the root cause problem? I am an engineer and have a full toolset as well as a multi-meter for diagnostics.

    Thanks

Hi,

If your washer won't spin, check these:

It doesn't pump or spin If it doesn't pump water out or spin, check to see if the motor is running, then proceed as follows:

  • If the motor is running, your washer probably has a frozen pump pulley or a broken pump belt. To check the pulley, remove the pump from the washer and try to rotate the pulley manually. If it doesn't turn freely--if it's frozen or stiff--replace it. If the pump belt is broken or looks quite worn, replace it--but be sure to check the pump pulley before you change the belt.

  • If the motor isn't running, the lid switch may be defective. If so, the washing machine can't spin and may not function at all. The switch is inside the washing machine main housing near the door frame. Often you have to raise or open the top or front of the washing machine to get to the switch. If it's defective, you need to replace it.

It pumps, but doesn't spin If your washer pumps out the water but doesn't spin, check these:

  • The lid switch may be defective. If it is, the washing machine doesn't spin. The switch is inside the washing machine main housing near the door frame. Often you have to raise or open the top or front of the washing machine to get to the switch. If it's defective, you need to replace it.

  • The motor coupler may be broken. Many Whirlpool®-manufactured washers use a small, relatively inexpensive motor coupling. It's plastic and rubber and is mounted to the shaft of the motor on one side, and to the transmission on the other. Over time, the coupler wears out and fails. You may need to replace it.

  • A belt may be broken. Many washing machines have one or two belts. If a belt is broken or badly worn, you need to replace it with a genuine belt from the manufacturer. (Some washing machine belts are designed with special characteristics not found in automotive belts.)

  • The clutch may be worn. If your washer is a GE, it may use a clutch to come up to the proper spin speed. As the clutch wears out, it may prevent the unit from spinning well or at all. If the clutch is worn, you need to replace it. For this job, you probably want to hire a qualified appliance repair technician.

  • The drive motor may be defective. Many washer brands use a reversing motor. For agitation the motor runs in one direction, for spinning and draining, the other. It's possible for a motor to burn out in one direction and continue to operate in the other. If this happens, you need to replace the entire motor.

  • The transmission may not be shifting properly. Older washers produced by Whirlpool® have a transmission with an electro-mechanical shifter. If the shifter becomes even partially defective, the unit may drain the water but not spin. This is a complex system, if your washer has a shifter problem, you may want to hire a qualified appliance repair technician to repair it.

  • The spin bearing or basket drive may be worn or seized. These components allow the inner tub to spin freely inside the outer tub. When this is the problem, you usually hear a loud sound during the spin cycle. Call a qualified appliance repair technician.

It spins only with the lid closed For safety, washing machines are made so that they spin only with the lid closed. The lid switch prevents the spinning action when the lid is up.

Please don't forget to rate or accept the solution.

Dear Sir/Madam,

If the other spin cycles work, it could be the timer. You would have to replace the timer. If you can limp buy for awhile, you may be able to turn the dial and spin the colors on the white cycle. Also check the drive belt that had broken on the inner tub pulley's.

Else check the Gear box is broken?. The Gear box has two modes, when the motor runs one way it, operates on "agitate" mode where the agetator is moved back and forth. When it runs other way it the entrie drum spins and some hoe safety breaks get engaged when it catches up speed. Then the motor get over heated and there is a safety overheat/load switch in the motor that shuts off the power to the entire machine. Check all these settings..

Good luck
Thanks

A machine that drains and doesn't spin usually has a problem with the door latch assembly or with the speed control board. I would bet your speed control board is bad.

You can order a new one from repairclinic.com and if it doesn't fix the problem, return it.

Let me know if you have any other questions,

First of all check the motor.most probably its got weak so its spinning when empty but not spinning when there are clothes in the machine. It doesn't spin If your washer won't spin, check these:

It spins only with the lid closed
