The problem lies with the mylar ribbon cable that connects the Keypad to the circuit board. The Mylar ribbon cable folds back onto itself and are touching. Over time the mylar 'breaks down' electrically and the wire traces in the mylar will 'arc' onto the other mylar ribbon cable. The solution is to separate the two mylar ribbon cables using paper and electrical tape. I've done this on several microwaves (not just Samsung) and it has worked every time. Patience and about 20 minutes is all it should take to fix it. I've described below how I did it for the SMH9187ST Microwave Good luck to all.
1. UNPLUG THE MICROWAVE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2. 1. Remove the top front cover by removing the (2) screws that are along the top edge (phillips).
3. 2. Slide the cover to the left about a half inch (there are tabs holding the cover in place) and remove.
4. 3. Remove (1) screw from the top of the Keypad Housing (phillips). Lift the Keypad Housing upwards about half an inch (there are tabs holding the Keypad Housing in place) and remove. Be careful of the metal grille that is just above the Keypad Housing as this may fall out since it is being held in place by the Housing.
5. 4. Be careful not to pull on the wiring harnesses that are attached to the Housing. Carefully unplug the wiring harness that has the RED connector on it from the circuit board. Carefully unplug the small white connector that has the mylar ribbon cable on it (this cable is see-through and you can see thin, flat wires in it).
6. 5. Remove (4) screws that are holding the circuit board onto the Housing.
7. The Housing should now be free of the circuit board and wiring harnesses. It's safe to let the wiring harness/circuit board hang free, but caution should be used anyway.
8. 6. Remove the thin metal frame from the Housing. There are (4) plastic tabs holding the frame in place. Using a small screw driver pry one side of the frame away from the housing (try to do this to the side that has smaller plastic tabs). When this side of the frame is free of the Housing you have to lift the frame out at an angle to remove. It might put up a fuss, but be patient and be gentle with it since the frame is thin and fragile.
9. 7. With the frame out of the way you will see the mylar ribbon cable that is coming out from underneath the Keypad assembly. You will notice that the mylar ribbon cable folds back onto itself as it re-enters the Keypad assembly. This 'touching of the two ribbon cables' is where the trouble lies. The ribbon cables may be stuck together. Carefully separate these two and then insert a small piece of paper between them (paper can be 1/2 x 1/2 ) and work the paper all the way down into the Keypad assembly as far as it will go.
10. 8. Using electrical tape, apply a small piece between the ribbon cables to hold the paper in place. Next, use more electrical tape and put it between the mylar ribbon cables enough so as to keep the ribbon cables separated.
11. 9. Re-attached the thin metal frame making sure to press it into the Keypad assembly enough so that the (4) tabs click into place.
12. 10. Use electrical tape and apply it to the raw metal edge of the thin metal frame to prevent the mylar ribbon cables from rubbing on the metal edge.
13. 11. That's it. A final word of caution. Be careful when inserting the ribbon cable connector back on to the circuit board. The connector is loose and you need to gently place the ribbon cable into the circuit board connector.
14. 12. Reverse the order of assembly from above.
15. 13. Plug in the microwave and then it should reset and ask you to set the time.
If you are unable to solve this problem using above mention solutions then you can try this one. Open all covers and then detach the DC controller board that is shown In picture below. it is the back side of DC controller board.
With this DC controller board you can see another small circuit bard that is attached with DC controller board with a white (ribbon) cable. I found two printers with this error when I examine the board I found that the thin print wires are broken as shown in the following picture. I have to connect these wires with soldering and now it is working fine.
If these printed wires are ok then you can check the ribbon cable .check all connectivity with Multimeter.
First you solve this problem with software.
Then try to find disconnected wires or dry soldering on circuit board.
Last you change the Dc controller board because the problem is in surly in DC controller board.
I had the same problem , so nowing about electronics i did a test at the read eye . then i notice where the ribbion cable joins the reading eye looked like it was crack at the contact so i replaced the ribbion cable from a old dvd player I had sitting around it worked that was three weeks ago. the cable i,am talking about is white in color that it connected to the board and the reading eye . it crack is so small at the it can be over looked . this was caused by the head moving back and forth.over time .

I have opened my camera and found that the flexible circuit/ribbon cable that connects the LCD to the inside of the camera is broken. This is due to poor design, in which the flexible circuit cannot withstand the constant movement of the LCD. I have managed to buy a new cable from a Sony repair dealer, and will attempt to fit it later on this week.

I think you are saying the ccd goes black? sometgimes it is connections on the ccd board that lift off the board and can be soldered back down , never had a bad ribbon cable in one. Other times it's a bad ccd assembly. I can check them out for you if you want. www.megaone.com/larry
Solution for Pioneer DV-C36 Multi Disk DVD player - tray door will not stay open.
My player would open the disk tray when the open button was press but when the tray was fully open it would retract back into the unit leaving no time to change or load disks. I found a poor connection at the ribbon cable connector was causing this problem. A seven conductor ribbon cable connects the main unit with the travelling tray. A position switch (S21) senses when the tray is fully extended and retracted. On my player pin 1 of the ribbon cable connector on the travelling tray was not making an electrical connection which causes the control system to retract the tray. The fault lies in the connector - the tang was not pressing against the ribbon cable conductor. I was able to desolder the connector and pull the contact out just far enough to reform the tang with fine needle nose pliers. This is very tedious and required an eye loupe for magnification. Tools required: #1 and #2 phillips screwdrivers Soldering and desoldering irons (or other desoldering tools) Fine needle nose pliers.
Remove the tray ribbon cable 1. Remove the cabinet cover - 6 screws. Open the tray. To keep the tray from retracting pull the power cord when the tray is extended. 2. Remove the front bezel from the tray. Gently pry up the bezel by relesing the catches with a small screwdriver. Allow the tray to retract. 3. Remove the front panel - undo large ribbon and wire connections on right, remove screws left and right, release two catch tangs on bottom edge using a small screwdriver on the inside of the unit. 4. Remove the white plastic cover over the laser mechanism ( 2 screws) Remove the disk carrier by removing the center screw. 5. Extend the tray again. When the tray is out the small ribbon cable is visible below the tray. Undo the ribon cable where it attaches to the main unit unit. 6. To slide the tray off the main unit use a small screwdriver to depress the stop catches (2) in the tray. They are molded into the tray. Pull the tray out further then lift up. 7. Flip over the tray and find the small circuit board the ribbon cable goes to. Desolder the motor wires (red and black) and remove the 2 screws holding the circuit board and position switch.
Use a multimeter to confirm there is an open or poor connection in the ribbon cable connector.
Remove the ribon cable and inspect the connector with an eye loupe or other magnification device. On my player contact #1 was not positioned properly to press against the ribbon cable conductor. You can either replace the connector or repair it. Warning: repairing the connector may damage it. To repair the contact desolder the connector from the circuit board. Bend the circuit board prong straight and push it into the body of the connector which will extend the contact out and the contact can be reformed. Be very gentle. Bending the contact may cause it to break.
Reassembly is the reverse. Don't forget to solder the motor wires with the proper polarity. Red and Black are labeled on the circuit board.
