Whirlpool Microwave Oven M542 makes a loud noise when turned on, previously operating perfectly. Is this easily repaired or do I need to buy a new oven?

    Hi,
Disappointing result as oven is only 8 years old (purchased 11.3.2003) and small electric motors usually last a long time, however I will take your advice and look to buy a replacement oven.

From your description it sounds like the turntable motor is starting to go, It could go at anytime or run for sometime before it stops working, "cooks food evenly" but! it makes more of a grinding sound, and tends to be loud. This would require a specialtist because it is a tricky repair and expensive.

Hi,

Press the "Off/Clear' button to cancel anything on the display, and reset the microwave. Press it when the cooking complete reminder appears on the display.
Perform a hard reset. Pull the plug out of the wall power supply, and wait a moment. Plug the microwave back into the wall power supply to reset any anomalies with the microwave's memory. You will need to reset the time of day if you perform a hard reset.
Reset the time of day. Press the "Clock" button, and turn the dial to set the hours. Press the dial to enter. Follow the same procedure for the minutes and a.m. or p.m. Press the "Start" button to start the clock. This should help fix the problem. If it does not, let me know.

Heat element not working

Well, if there is not heating the food and making a loud buzzing or humming sound when it is on, then the magnetron has failed. It typically shorts out and fails. The magnetron for this cost $140 plus the cost of the service call, you're better off buying a new oven. Hope this helps.

Microwave not heating

In all likelihood the mangnetron has failed, or perhaps even the Power Supply. You need to have it serviced by a reputable service centre/man. Ensure you get a firm "Quote" before proceeding, and remember these days the cost of repair can equal or exceed the price of a new one.

Whirlpool microwave makes loud buzzing noise

When your microwave oven won't cook your food, and, you hear a loud buzzing sound, it’s normally caused by a faulty (a) diode (b) high-voltage capacitor (b) magnetron.
The diode would be the most likely culprit of the three components. It’s also by far the cheapest!

Not Heating!!

This seems to be a defective magnetron tube. Because of the very high voltage, (~5000 volts) you need to be experienced in this type of repair. Sending it out for service may cost around $150, so you need to evaluate the probable cost vs a new oven.

A rattling noise

You have a problem with the microwave stirrer motor. Cost of part is near $90 and will require 2+ hours to get to, exchange and close back up.

Either get a new microwave of put up with the noise (which I did for 6+ years).

Makes a loud humming noise while operating

Almost certainly, the component called the "magnetron" has died. This is the valve (tube in the US) which actually generates the microwaves. The loud humming is the transformer that supplies the magnetron being overloaded and/or the magnetron itself. If the rest of the appliance is OK and not too old, the magnetron can be replaced. If you aren't familiar with these appliances, you *must* get this done by someone who understands the dangers of messing with them - if you get it wrong, they can bite! In some countries, only qualified engineers can buy the spare parts. In the UK, the part costs around £40 - £80, depending on the model. If the appliance is more than around three years old, it may be a false economy to repair it as other parts may fail soon after the repair.
