Lost the password cannot login to the computer, what should we do?
It is normal that we forget something, especially a password which we set, and do not use it often it evaporates! How to handle such a situation?
Let us understand the different type of passwords we use.
1. BIOS / System setup password
2. Windows password
3. Wireless access password (passkey)
4. Router log in password
5. File level Password (used when we compress / zip a file or when we create a word or excel file)
6. Password for our email
7. Hard drive password (some laptops have this feature)
Let us see how to tackle when we loose any such passwords one by one.
1. BIOS / System setup password:
This is saved in the flash memory present on the motherboard.
If you forget this we can reset it by using the Clear CMOS settings jumper present on the motherboard. We have to refer to the user manual of the motherboard or the computer for locating this jumper.
If this is set to your laptop, you will have trouble especially if your computer is out of warranty, since only the manufacturers can help you reset a laptop system setup / BIOS password. Write a mail to them, about the situation.
2. Windows password:
This is saved in the hard drive (of course encrypted)
If this is set in windows XP, try pressing CTRL+ALT+Del twice in the login screen. Type administrator in the username box and do not type anything in the password box (usually administrators / system installation technicians forget to give an administrator password.) and hit enter, if you can login successfully you can reset the password from this account. If this does not work there are still ways to bypass it for that you need expert advice, contact us.
If this is setup in Windows Vista / Windows 7 you need to have your Vista / Win 7 installation DVD and some expert advice and we can help you.
3. Wireless access password (passkey):
If you forget your wireless passkey, you have to refer to the router / access point manual and log in to the router page (before login, that requires another password - refer to your manual, defaults will be there) and there you can either see the passkey or change it to a new passkey.
4. Router log in password:
If you have changed the router log in password, refer to the manual again on how to reset the router / access point, usually with a small button present at the back panel of the router. (be aware that all your router settings will be changed to factory settings and if you have other computers that are working fine that will also not connect to internet unless you reconfigure it)
5. File level Password:
If you have set a password while creating a word or excel file or while you zip it, I would recommend not to forget it. Some of them can be recovered but not always
6. Password for our email:
If your forget the password for your email then click on the forgot password link and answer to the questions which you have set while signing up for the email, the password will be reset or sent to another email. If you have not set such questions log in to day to your email account and set up those questions.
7. Hard drive password:
This password feature is available in certain laptop models. (be careful when you buy second hand / old laptop hard drives if this password was set you hard drive will not work untill you give this password.) This password can be reset by the respective manufacturer of the computer in which this hard drive was shipped / configured.
So do not panic when you get into such situations, read through the above options and contact us for additional help.
