If this is the third time it has done it, use the same method you did before to fix the problem?

Hi, I would cept each fix has meant giving it back to the manufacturer to repair. I just wish I knew what was going on so I could fix this myself :( I've only had the laptop for 5 months.. this will be the third time I need to send it back. Did I just get the one lemon cause I love the brand..

Sorry to hear that, but yes it does sound like you have a duff machine, have you tried connecting an external monitor to the laptop and see if it is showing anything?

  • Martin Murray Mar 13, 2011

Just to add if it is the third time in 5 months then you can ask them to replace it with a new one. As obviously the problem isnt being resolved

How do I find out what the F keys do on my Asus laptop? and how to use them?

What is the model of you Asus computer. There are a wide rage of differences between them as there are extra functions to them. The basic old school uses are as follows:

As a throwback to DOS days, you will find that the F1 key will often bring up a help menu. If you press F1 while working in a program, help for that program will usually appear. If you press F1 while at the Windows desktop or when the Windows Explorer is open, a Windows help screen will pop up. If you happen to be working in a program and would like to see the Windows help screen, simply press the Windows key (the key with the Windows logo on the bottom row of keys) on your keyboard and press F1 at the same time.
You can use the F2 key to rename an item when working in Windows. Highlight any folder or file, and press F2. You will then be able to type a new name for the object. After you type the new name, just click outside the name box or press the enter key to make the name change. This works just like right-clicking a file or folder and selecting Rename.
When you are working in Windows, the F3 key will open the Find Files window.
The F4 key has some very useful functionality. You can press F4 to open the Address bar when working in Internet Explorer. This will allow you to type the address of a Web page for quick access.
You can also press the Alt key and the F4 key at the same time to close the open Window that you are currently working on.
The F5 key is the refresh key. You can press F5 when viewing a Web page to make sure that you have the most current version of that Web page. You can also use F5 when in Windows to refresh the screen. This can be a handy shortcut. If perhaps you are viewing the contents of a CD and you remove that CD and insert another CD, your screen will still show the contents of the CD. Just press F5 to refresh the screen and see the contents of the CD you just inserted.
This key is often used to move the cursor around the structure of the program. Pressing it will often cycle you from window to window. In Internet Explorer and Firefox, pressing F6 moves the cursor to the address bar.
The F7 key does not have any functionality in Windows. It may, however be used in some individual programs. To find out if it is available in the program you are using, bring up the program's help screen and type in the words function key.
The F8 key can be used to access Safe Mode if pressed during the computer's boot up process. This is a trouble-shooting mode which will start the computer with minimal drivers.
The F9 key does not have any functionality in Windows. It may, however be used in some individual programs. To find out if it is available in the program you are using, bring up the program's help screen and type in the words function key.
F10 is the key that is used to activate the menu bar in many programs. You can use F10 to highlight the first menu choice, and then use the arrow keys to move around the menus. Pressing the Shift key while pressing F10 will bring up the shortcut menu. This is similar to right-clicking on an object.
Press F11 when you are working in Internet Explorer and many other programs, and the window will open to full screen mode. This will make all the toolbars disappear and can be useful to see more information on the screen. Press F11 when you are in full screen mode will toggle you back to your normal view.
The F12 key does not have any functionality in Windows. It may, however be used in some individual programs. To find out if it is available in the program you are using, bring up the program's help screen and type in the words function key.

I have a PanasonicTHP42X20Z TV and I am trying to connect this to my Presario V6000 with a VGA cable. When I hook it all up the TV screen remains black. Image is only showing on the laptop. I an not...

One of the "F" keys on the top row of the keyboard will have an icon of a computer a "/" and an empty rectangle - I think it's either F5 or F8 on a Compaq.

Hold down the "FN" key (next to CTRL) and press the "F" key with this icon on it. One press should switch the TV display on, a second press will turn off the laptop display so it's only using the TV as a monitor and a third press will revert to laptop display only.

Hope this helps.

Computer start, but screen is blank and the scroll lock indicator lights up?

Scroll lock has nothing to do with the screen image.
The only way to check the screen is to plug in an external monitor and press the function button followed by the appropriate F key to switch between internal and external screens (normally F5 or F8 which ever the key could be marked with a screen icon.
Three presses one to switch to external second press both screens third press back to normal.
Hope this helps

The screen remains black when computer is turned

maybe a hardware problem, on booting the pc, move the screen to every angle to see if there is a connection problem.
If so, then use your warranty if you have one.

When I power up laptop screen is blank

You may have a burned video adapter.

A trouble shoting setp you can try is attatching an external display and seeing if that works.
Also try the function F5 key combo. I think that is the ASUS mapping to switch display output.

Which function key allows to switch to tv

Hi there,
You need to press hold the FN key and press the F4 function key once which toggles the display to the External Display source like the television connected along with the LCD of the Notebook.
If the FN and F4 key combination is pressed again, the display will dissappear from the LCD of the Notebook and remain only on the external source.
If the FN and F4 key combination is pressed third time, the display will be back on the LCD of the Notebook and will not remain on the External display source.
Here are these details in other way :
First time pressing FN + F4    ---> Display on LCD and External display
Second time pressing FN + F4 ---> Display not on LCD but on the External Display
Third time pressing FN + F4 ---> Display back on the LCD and not available on External Display (Normal position).
Below are the details of what the Function keys in your DV1000 Notebook work :
fn + f1 Opens Help and Support Center fn + f2 Opens print options window fn + f3 Opens default Internet browser fn + f4 Switches the image among displays fn + f5 Initiates Standby fn + f6 Initiates QuickLock fn + f7 Decreases screen brightness fn + f8 Increases screen brightness fn + f9 Plays, pauses, or resumes an audio CD or DVD fn + f10 Stops an audio CD or DVD fn + f11 Plays the previous track or chapter on an audio CD or DVD fn + f12 Plays the next track or chapter on an audio CD or DVD fn + esc Displays system information.* (*To clear the system information display, press esc.)
Hope this helps...
