If the heater has not been cleaned and serviced annually, the problem may be caused by incomplete combustion, due to the air intake mixture valve on the burner(s) being clogged. Also, low gas pressure can cause this. As you know, incomplete combustion can and will cause a build up of carbon monoxide.

With you being a firefighter, I'm sure you would want this checked by a qualified technician. Personally, as a volunteer & career EMT for the past 25 years, I would highly recommend that you have this done.

Hope this helped answer your question.

Normally soot is from a range that hasn't been converted for the gas type, like natural or propane. It may be set up for natural when you're on propane or visa versa. Has this range ever worked properly without sooting?

Black soot on outside wall above hot air exhaust. Excess flame, incomplete combustion? How to adjust/correct?

All gas water heaters, tankless and tank-type, require cleaning burner and combustion parts.
Tankless manuals suggest once per year.
Tank-type once every 2-3 years.

Black soot every were how do i clean it and what with

Well, Boat Bob, you can clean the soot off by using a Shop Vac with a brush attachment on the hose. That will take off the biggest portion of it. Then you can clean the remainder of the outside with a damp cloth, but be sure to dry the cabinet afterward. Remove the screws the are holding the face of the of the cabinet on and proceed to clean all of the interior of the heater cabinet fire, with the Shop Vac , being sure to vacuum the burner(s) thoroughly, as well as the pilot assembly and all the mechanical 's. What soot isn't removed with shop vac, should be removed with a DRY cloth. Then use a can of compressed air with a straw nozzle (like you clean your computer with) to blow out the pilot and all around the pilot assembly.

For the remaining soot on walls, ceilings, furniture, etc. Gently vacuuming is the best way to remove the lion' share of the soot. Then, if necessary, the walls and ceiling can be washed with a diluted solution of Simple Green and water. Clean small areas at a time.

After that, you need to turn your attention, as to why the heater sooted? Several things come to mind ... No annual professional cleaning and service; Incomplete combustion; Vent pipe partially obstructed; Low gas pressure; Clogged burner(s), Obstructed air intake.

If you'd like further information, here is a link to your Owners Manual, which will help you to Troubleshoot the heater. http://www.empirecomfort.com/EMPIRECOMFORT/pdf2009/manuals/12433-10-0109DV.pdf

PLEASE CHECK THE OUT SIDE VENT AND MAKE SURE THERE IS NO SOOT BUILD UP. IF SO TURN OFF AND HAVE CLEANED. DID YOU JUST PAINT WITH AN OIL BASE PAINT? THIS WILL CAUSE AN " KEROSENE" TYPE ODOR WHEN FLANE IS ON.

What causes black soot to smoke up our complete house with ventless logs

Hi,
Take the pilot and burnner assembly all apart and blow it out with compressed air then reassemble and make sure that the air shutter is totally open. The soot is cause by a bad air/fuel misture that is too rich and cause carbon to form from incomplete combustion. If the burner continues to make soot then reduce the gas pressure to the gas log at the pressure regulator.

We have a dynna glo zero clearance for Natural Gas

Before you attempt to covert to lp. You need to check the flue. Black smoke is cause by incomplete combustion. So it may be now plug with black soot. Heat-exchanger may be damage Before you invest in a lp kit. Make sure it is worth it. To convert you need the main burner orifices and lp spring for gas value. Once you replace these parts you must adjust gas pressure, nat gas is measured at 3.2 - 3.5wc lp is measured 10.5 - 11.00 wc. In my honest opinion this is to dangerous for customer to attempt. Please a HVAC contractor inspect unit and install lp kit.

Black soot on glass and black smoke comes out

Remove the burner and clean all holes ,typically at the end of the burner is a cheep sheet metal valve. This valve adjusts the air to gas mixture by rotating it to increase or decrease the combustible air intake.Air must be sucked into the burner as natural gas is injected into it, this makes for a clean flame,The flame should be blue with small yellow tips.If the flame is long and yellow and sooty increase the air intake on the burner valve.

Natural gas heater

The burners are shot. The heavy metal tubes with the holes that the burner flame comes out of, has burnt through. Instead of little rows of holes, there is at least one large hole in it. Unless someone has changed the gas>air mixture, you need new burners.
