Think "tildeck" HAS the problem- so find the grease nipple and shoot some grease there. If that doesn't work= add some heat - some times the ox axe torch will move it, would commend disconnecting the motor from the cable to confirm the problem

If the motor has been sitting it might be siezed by rust. There is a greaase fitting on all outboards to lubricate the shaft that it turns on. Look under the head near your transom and it is probably there. I am thinking this may be your problem.

Steering gear

Hi Alfred.

Your answer will depend on the fishing boat.
For really small boats, with an outboard motor on the back, the motor will be on a pivot joint, and have a handle in front. You point the running motor side to side to steer the boat.

Larger boats with outboards will have a steering wheel with a mechanical linkage to an outboard motor or motors that will pivot them side to side to steer.

Larger fishing boats, especially commercial boats, will have an inboard engine and prop shaft, a fixed external propellor or propellors, and a rudder that is connected with a mechanical linkage to the steering wheel or ships-wheel to move the rudder side to side and steer the boat by deflecting how the water flows by when under way.

Hoping this helps.

I have a sailboat with a 9. outboard should the motor be moving as I steer with the tiller?

Normally with such a set up you increase the steering friction adjustment till the motor is to all intents and purposes locked solid.
I don't recommend having it moving if you can stop it .

I have a 50 hp 1975 Johnson outboard. When I turn

There is a switch in the control box that locks out the start unless you are in neutral. Open the box and put in a new switch, this is a safty device to keep it from starting in forward and throwing you out of the boat. Jim OMC retired Mech

Need to know how to set up carb on 1985 johnson outboard. front adj on the carb got moved looking for starting point to get me close to running.

try disconnecting the throttle cable, loosen carb linkages, assure that both carbs are FULL closed....tighten linkage - and cable ...check for FULL open and close with the throttle....this will be your starting point, advise to get a service manual for your outboard model to correctly adjust the carbs for max performance....GL hope this helps..
