Question about Singer 3116 Simple

1 Answer

I just started using an old singer 477. i worked for a few mintues. then the needle wouldn't go down. it was hitting what felt like metal. i pulled the bobbin holder out, and could see the metal part underneth would alternatively sometimes spin when pushing the pedal of the machine, and sometimes it wouldn't. any ideas? i am trying to decide if this is a machine worth keeping?

Sure it is. If you've not spent the time and money to have this oldie cleaned and timed I would encourage you to do so.

You certainly have a bent needle by now. So change that out and use the hand wheel to see if it moves smoothly, then try again. If it doesn't take it in and have it cleaned and serviced. These old machines like this are great.

Pixie plus sewing machine needle does not go down into the bobbin but hits the metal plate on top of the bobbin. The needle cannot go through the sewing slot.

Sounds like your needle is set to off-center. Check your manual. You may have a straight-stitch plate in your machine but you have it set to stitch off center or it is set to zig-zag stitch and the needle is unable to clear the stitch plate.

Singer model 640 needle hits metal in bobbin area on downstroke

Yep, it's out of time. Take it in for service. Ask for cleaning, lubing and re-timing. Otherwise they will just time it and if it is dirty and dry... it may just fall out of time again.

Also remember you can never turn the hand wheel backwards to the way it is intended to go... that causes this issue in some machines.

Singer 758 breaking needle

Machine breaks needles
1.make sure you are using the right needle for your type of sewing machine.
. There are cases where the machine will only use ones specified in the owners manual.
2.the presser foot may not be installed properly
3.use the correct needle for the type of fabric you are working with. To fine of needle on heavy fabric or to course a needle on silk or jersey can damage fabric.
4.let the feed dogs guide the fabric & the feed dogs will work with the presser foot .
5.the needle is not all the way in -push all the way up against the stop
6. Check top thread tension
7. machine could be out of time & need to be serviced

The needle keeps breaking. The needle seems to be hitting something or getting caught when it goes down and then it breaks off. I can't even get the needle to pick up the bobbin thread because it...

Certain stitches you do, require different base plates...by the base plate, I mean the metal piece that the needle passes through when it goes down through your cloth and through the hole provided...This sounds like why it's breaking, I think your needle is hitting the plate under it. It may not be all that obvious, but it wouldn't take much to snap the needle. You may want to check your setting and make sure it's setup to do a regular stitch. If that's not it, then you need to make sure that the needle is in straight, though I believe putting on in crooked is hard to do.
I hope this helps.

The thread is bunching up under the needle and needle keeps hitting something metal down in the bobbin case which then stops the machine. I've rethreaded bobbin, adjusted tension, checked needle &...

Your problem stems from the faulty foot lever mechanism. It's coupled to the upper thread tension control which only provides tension when the presser foot is in the locked down position.

If the presser foot won't positively engage in the down position, there's no upper thread tension and the thread bunches up below. Everything else stems from there. If the needle has hit the bobbin case too frequently then the bobbin timing may also be slightly out and the needle itself will be damaged and won't pass straight through the fabric; it only takes a tiny deflection from the vertical as it passes through the workpiece for the needle to flex and hit the bobbin case.

In summary, your machine is in desperate need of repair and adjustment. You haven't stated which exact Singer model you have, but they are usually easy to get servicing manuals for or you can take the machine to a sewing machine servicing specialist. Most singer spare parts (even for 100 year old machines) are usually still available fairly cheaply from a variety of sources, just enter "Singer spares" into your search engine to find suppliers.

To prevent re-occurrence, clean the mechanism regularly and lubricate it as directed by the manufacturer using sewing machine oil. Depending on how often you use the machine, do (or have done) a more thorough service periodically to check the timing and also that all mechanism screws remain tightly fastened.

I hope that my reply has shed some light on your problem and enables you to decide what to do next. Please take a moment to rate my answer.

Time for a tune up and the timing to be reset. People tend forget that machines do need to be serviced once in a while, it will be well worth it. Just remember it is a machine, just like your car.

A bent needle will hit the metal. If it continues you will need to adjust the needle carrier. hopefully that isn't bent, but if so I don't believe that the replacement of it will be too costly.
