Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console
Even though your PS3 was bought in a country that uses a different TV system than the North American system, it will not effect your ability to use it. The PS3 was made to be used with the HDTV format which is universal regardless of which country you are in. The problem you are experiencing has to be either the inputs of your TV, or an issue with the PS3.
If you are already using other hardware with your TV, such as a DVD player, and you are able to use those inputs, then we can eliminate the TV. That would mean there is something wrong with the PS3. If the PS3 is starting up normally, and your power light is not blinking (which is a built in diagnostic program), then there may be an issue with the outputs of the PS3. If the cables you have tried to use with the PS3 work on other units then we can eliminate that issue. The problem would then be the internal components of the PS3. Try this;
1) Press and hold the power button long enough for it to power on and then off again.
2) When it goes off press and hold the power button again until you hear 2 beeps. As soon as you hear those 2 beeps immediately let go of the power button.
3) At this point you should get a display and the system will ask you to connect the controller.
4) Plug in the controller and you should then see a menu on the screen like this:
If you are not able to see the menu at all then your problem is internal to the components. At that point you will have to take your PS3 to a repair center and have them take a look at it. Ask them to give you a quote before they fix anything as the repair may end up costing you more than what your Dad paid for the unit.

Tips for a great answer:

Press and hold the power button again
until it shuts off again.
Once you have verified that AV is working, turn off console, take out AV cables.
Plug in HDMI cable and turn system back on. Switch TV input to HDMI and it will ask you if you would like to use the HDMI cables, select yes again and verify.
If you cannot get sound, again, check the cables..
If new cables do not work, then your HDMI output is going bad, not from use rather normal wear and tear of the motherboard.
To get the best non HD picture, you will need to get some 'component' cables, rather than the standard AV (red, white, yellow).
