Some newer blu ray discs require that your system be updated to view the movie. This is due to a security "encryption" set by various movie companies. (they are trying to prevent people from copying their movies).
If your PS3 is connected to the internet this should be done automatically when trying to view the movie.
hope it helps

The PS3 will not play the new (BD) dvd I just hired .And i have never had this problem befor. Its askin me to renew my encryption key and says something about system software up date. I am not connected to...

All Blue Ray players need to be updated from time to time to keep up with the growing technology of Blue Ray. PS3 is the same way. It is asking you to update your PS3 in order to play the disc. On the back of the PS3 is a Ethernet port (looks like an over sized phone jack) connect this to your internet (modem) and it will update your encryption key and software needed to play Blue Ray discs. Here is a link for that as well.

I tried to watch a blu-ray last night and my playstation said it could not be viewed until the "encryption key" was updated. What does this mean and what should I do?

Hi,

You need to update the system software so the encryption key can be renewed.
You will need an internet connection to the PS3 for this otherwise you will not be able to view the latest Blu-Ray movies.

From what I can remember it is in settings > system update.

Once the system is updating DO NOT switch off the PS3 or mess with the controllers until the update is finished and has rebooted the PS3.

Regards.

How to perform system software update to renew encryption key on my playststion 3

You may have to renew the AACS encryption key to play content such as movies on commercially available BD video software (BD-ROM). If a message indicating that the encryption key needs to be renewed is displayed, update the system software to the latest version. The encryption key will then be automatically renewed.
AACS (Advanced Access Control System) is a copyright-protection technology that is used on Blu-ray Discs. The copyrighted content is protected by setting an encryption key on both the disc and the device used to play the disc.
An AACS encryption key expires in 12 to 18 months and must be renewed. There may also be other times when the key has to be renewed. in the manual

Bought a blue ray movie to try out on ps3 now it asks for an encryption key, wth? i don't hook my ps3 to inter net, but asking for a system software update to renew encryption key to play blue ray

-= Renew PS3 Encryption Key =-

If i was you i wouden update. the latest update sony have provided is causing alot of problems, such as not being able to read blue-ray movies and games. (3.00/3.01)

I know you dont see it this way, but i acaully see you as a very lucky person that you havent updated your machine yet, my ps3 dont work anymore after i updated, or it does work, but it just cant read any blueray games or movies.

But if you have a ps3 slim you probaly wont have this problem, its more older models that suffer under this bug. :(

i dont know what your current firmware is, but if its way below 2.80, then your still in the safe zone, cuz if you own a usb memory stick you can transfer the 2.80 update to ( USB-ROOT\PS3\UPDATE\PS3UPDAT.PUP ) and then unplug it from your computer and insert it into your ps3 and then try the update from local storeage.

i hope you can use this :o)

The only way to renew the encryption key is, unfortunately, to connect to the internet. Sorry.
