All you need to do is to connect the headphone to the correct port or plug and it should change automatically.
If it doesn't change, then you can now go through the settings and see if it has been changed to play through the loudspeakers by default. Although, plugging the headphone alone should solve the problem.
Hope this was helpful?

SOURCE: How to turn off speaker when using headphones

Just had the same issue with my GF's nano so i phoned apple and got the following solution:

Flick the button/switch on the top of the nano on and off 6 times leaving the orange bit not showing.

Now hold down the menu button and the middle button for 15 seconds until an apple icon appears. SORTED!

now the speaker turns off when you plug the headphones in plus rest assured it doesn't reset the ipod and remove your songs.

SOURCE: iPod Nano 4GB model# A1236 will no longer turn

Sounds like a dead battery. You'll have to send it into Apple, or find the parts on ebay and do it yourself.

It will actually work, however, you will not be able to dock the iPod® Nano into the JBL On Stage™. You can connect the audio in cable to the headphone jack of your iPod. That's the only way, hope this helps. Pls rate solution. Thanks!!

HOW CAN I TURN OFF THE SPEAKERS N MY IPOD NANO I HOPE U GUYS CAN HELP ME...

I had the same issue as reported above: I could not turn off the built in speaker even when the headphones were plugged in. What I did to correct his was to unplug the headphones from the unit, and then cycle power by holding down the menu and center buttons at the same time until the power shuts off. Once it loaded back up I plugged in the headphones and it worked properly. Hope this helps.
