GE spacesaver microwave XL1800, all works but not heating

There are some troubleshooting steps you can take to possibly determine the problem before calling or taking it for service, you need a multimeter and a capacitor discharging tool. if you posses BOTH of these tools,
there are 4 causes for this symptom
1) Transformer
2) Capacitor
3) Diode
4) Magnetron
I can instruct you on how to test and/or replace the first three of these. The magnetron is VERY dangerous and should not be serviced or tampered with except by qualified personel. let me know if you would like to take any of these steps otherwise you could bring it to a repair station.
Hope this helps...Feedback always helps me

ok start over
you need to be looking at the inside of the door
the frame around the glass the choke
will pop off,,
take a small flat head place it between the choke and the frame down by the hinge. pry ever so carefully it will pop out slide the screwdriver around the edge until the whole choke is dislodged
once the choke is off
you will see the two screws for the handle
you may need to lift the latch mechinism to get to the bottom one
once your done you can simply push the choke back it place you will here it snap

be careful the choke is very brittle
and will break if bent

Should we hire a pro to install our above the range microwave oven, or is it something a layman can usually do? We need to cut a vent.

It really depends on your skill level and if you have the right tools.

I would do a read-through of the installation instructions, then you can probably judge whether or not it's for you.

If you don't have your installation instructions, please reply back with your brand and model number so we can help you.

Panasonic NN-S254 additional installation instructions

I just removed mine. There should be two long screws coming down from above into the unit. Remove them completely and then lift the microwave up towards the cabinet and slide forward. Sometimes some jiggling will help.
Leave the hanger assembly on the wall. It has the two prongs that go into the "insert" slots
