How do i get my dell d630 to bring up windows after it has done a windows update and keeps displaying 3of3 0% and again it shuts down. I was installing avast onto my laptop when windows started doing updates out of no where and when it finished it restarted and started initalizing updates, it restarted after it did 1of3 and again after 2of3 and after 3of3 and after that restart it showed 3of3 initiaizing 0% forabout 1 minute and then it shuts down and continues this loop. I have tried booting in safe mode with command prompt, thorough boot instead of fast, etc. also this laptop is new and it came without any cds or dvds or anything to recover or repair. Your advice would be greatly appreciated. THANK YOU MUCH! Elisa Parker

I know this issue is related to Avast AntiVirus, please try Safe Mode, and run an utility to uninstall Avast
Then you can install instead Microsoft Security Essential (MSE), highly recommended.;topic=68604.0
Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear5.exe find it here ( and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for multiple avast versions).

  • 1. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility from safe mode, first for 5.0 and then for 5.1 (if it has a 5.1 option).
  • 2. once complete reboot into normal mode.

Usually, after you re-install ... and set UPDATE mode (for Windows & IE) to automatic ... the system will look for and download updates (to Windows, browsers, etc.) automatically. So, shut down and restart ... and let it do it's (automatic) download & install . It may take quite a while, to bring you up to the latest Windows XP version.

Problem on the device driver/ motherboard

Boot under XP, go to Dell's website and download the XP driver for your laptop noting where it is saved. Don't install it, copy it to a thumb drive or a CD. Reboot into Windows 7 and then install the XP driver. You'll get a message that it isn't the correct one but choose install anyway. That chip doesn't fully support AERO in Win 7 but will do most everything you will need. If you want to disable the pointing stick on the keyboard, download the XP Dell trackpad software. That lets you go in and deactivate the pointing stick. I find it annoying.

When I click Fn-F8 to it says presentation mode is off. How do I turn it on. I cant make it display on my lap top and projector at the same time. Some times when I change it to minitor only it doesn't...

First thing you want to do is update the video driver. I use a D630 myself and had the same issue. I updated the driver and it worked fine. Here is a link to download the driver -

If you scroll down to Video you can then slect the correct driver. If you are not using Windows XP then change it at the top with the drop down menus.

The most common video driver is the intel one.

Collapse in graphical view and hang!

You say you replaced the graphics card?
Either way, this is one of two things. Hardware (a faulty display card) or drivers. If it is an old card, or you did a driver update recently, go to your device manager, and roll back to your previous drivers. if this doesn't solve the problem I recommend getting the latest drivers for your display card, installing them and seeing what happens.

Hope this solves your problem!

The screen automatically turns off even though the laptop is on..

First i need to know if the screen comes back on if you move your mouse. Because if it does the update changed your settings for power saving. To change this, either check the screen saver setting to make sure that is not on blank screen and if that is not the case go to Start Menu>Control Panel>Power Options and see what the settings under power schemes is. It will have two options, Plugged in and batteries. For plugged in Set the time To never and it won't turn your display off on you again.
If this doesn't work let me know so i can update and solve your problem

Hope This Helps
