Your convergence ICs need to be replaced. Please respond to this same post and verify your model number and I will post the correct ICs for your model and post a link where you can get replacements with free instalation instructions.

Sorry thats not a valid model number for Hitachi. Can you check the number again?

It sounds more like the red convergence more than the Tube. Can you adjust the red convergence? Does your model have magic focus? If so does it go through the magic focus process or does it stop?

Ok, the company I work for was finally able to get the service manual. You will need two STK392-120 Convergence ICs and (6) 3.3 ohm 1watt metal film resitors for RK42,45 46, 50, 53 and RK54. (1) 2.2 ohm 1watt for RK62 and (1) 3.9 ohm 1watt for RK58. get three 1.5 ohm 1watt as some bariations have the 1.5 for RK42 RK46 and RK53 instead of the 3.3 . and get an extra 3.9 ohm 1 watt as different variations have the 1.8 ohm for RK54 instead of the 3.3 . But you will be able to tell by the markings on those 5 locations. You can get replacement parts at the following link with free online instant messageing to help you through the repair, and they do ship to Austraila but they do have a shipping charge for overseas orders. But the tech support is good and its free.

    Heres the link.

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony2_bing.gif,Samsung, JVC, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Akai, Pioneer2_bing.gif, Hitachi, Zenith, and others. You can get a convergenece repair kit wiith instructions from the links below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

Problem #1) Convergence

Yours may have one or more of the following symptoms

  • Screen Looks 3-D
  • Colors wont align
  • Screen may look distorted or warped
  • No Audio/Video - makes a chirping sound.
Problem #2

Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

  • Dull looking picture
  • White looking picture
  • Halos around objects
  • Red/Orange looking picture

You can see some more examples and find a fix here

Color shadowing on screen

I had similar symptoms about a year ago. Also came on sudden. The red convergence chip had burned out (poor heat sinking on this model Hitachi). Replacing the color convergence chips fixed it. ($50 for parts.) First, however, have you tried the "magic focus" function? That's explained in the manual, which is available online IIRC, but I'd have to look for the link if you need it.

Broken screens on 53'' Hitachi rear-projection TV

I think it would likely work if you trimmed it evenly around the sides in order to maintain the central position. Focus may have to be adjusted but thats all.

Shadows double vision

Projection TV sets are known to have two common problems. The first problem that is common to these sets is convergence failure. When this happens the TV will usually look 3D, Wavy/Distorted, etc. It may also shutdown and blink an error code.

The second common problem with Projection TV sets is dull video, halos around objects, white looking video, or red overpowers the screen. This is commonly caused by the fluid in the lens being clouded over.

it sounds like your blue convergence ic is getting weak you need to replace the ic's STK392-110 and you should replace both because when 1 is bad the other will go real soon. They are inexspensive at the sight I posted and you will also get free tech online support if you purchase them there.

It's a hardware malfunction. It can't finish the magic focus cuz one of the IC is burned. Need to be replaced and to check the resistors.
