Question about Canon Cameras

3 Answers

I have a Canon 7 D camera. When I put the Compact Flash card reader in the computer, it will not open the photos. I have 3 SanDisk CopactFlash cards and only 1 brings up photos. These cards have all been formatted. We shoot in raw. Up until today, they all worked fine. All photos are clearly visible IN the camera. Attached the camera directly to the computer yields the same negative results. To make this more confusing, I did a test and used another card reader I had and that allowed me to open up one of the cards that the other one would not...but it wouldn't work on the other two, so I don't think the card reader is the issue. I also took the cards to CVS and results were the same....the ones I could open on my computer did open there, others did not. What I see when I open in My Documents are 4 yellow folders. Three of them are "CRW" Files 847 Canon, 848 Canon, 849 Canon. The 4th one says Canon MSC and there are 3 CTG files in it. When I right click, the error message is: "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action" Create an association in the Folders Options Control Panel" I'm especially confused as these cards were working fine until now....and one of the cards still works fine. They are newer cards. As a test, we took a few photos this morning on another card and it opened fine in the computer. We are nature photographers and have an order to fill for a gallery opening this week...Help please! Elaine P.S. Already tried System Restore in computer...there were no changes, so nothing to restore.

Hi eagle338, I installed Smart Recovery, but I have questions about how to retrieve photos.
Need step by step directions, please, as terminology is not clear to me. I put CompactFlash into card reader into CPU/tower. I'm not sure which "drive" it is, but "C" drive is the only choice that allows the "Start" key to work, so assume I have the correct drive? For Format type, should I put in what the card reads now..."Canon CRW" or what I want it to read in "JPEG" ? Under Select Destination, it says to please enter a path

Hello Elaine. Download your driver once again, as if it was the first time you when you first bought this camera. Sometimes, the driver info develops a glitch and you simply have to start over with it. The best way to do this is to go to the Canon website and download the free driver from there. It will have all of the latest information on it. Joe

OK well ONE reason your, a, PC will not "Open" or "Read" these files is you most likely do not have the correct CODEC installed to enable the PVC to "Read" these images.
What you need to do is find out the Format the camera saves in, and locate a CODEC for that image file and after installing it and a reboot, now your PC should "See" the images and display them.
I believe Canon have a proprietary software that one uses to download and display and manipulate camera images, perhaps it would be a good idea, to go to the Canon website and download the software and try using that, installing this will also most likely install the necessary CODEC's anyway.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codec
Above is all about CODESC's Below is a place to download CODECS.
www.free-codecs.com/

If however it still won;t work, then perhaps you will need to cut your losses and see if you can Format the Memory Cards, FAT32. (You WILL LOSE ALL DATA THOUGH)Then install the memory back in camera, and ALSO here FORMAT them again, if allowed. Now, take some Pictures and then try connecting and downloading, this may just be a bad section of memory or a glitch etc.
Also ensure that any necessary "Drivers" & "Software" are installed for the Camera if it uses them.. best place to ascertain this is the Canon support site

Also this below can sometimes help.
Remove and reinstall all USB controllers To remove and reinstall all USB controllers, follow these steps: Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl in the Open box, and then click OK. Click the Hardware tab. Click the Device Manager button. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers. Right-click every device under the Universal Serial Bus controllers node, and then click Uninstall to remove them one at a time. Restart the computer, and then reinstall the USB controllers. Plug in the removable USB storage device, and then test to make sure that the issue is resolved.

C drive is usually the windows drive. When you connect your card reader a new drive appears in my computer right? Which one is it?

In that case the smart recovery software does not seem to recognize it. Try this one
    http://www.datarecoverybook.com/download...
The demo will only let you read the files not recover them.

After you finish scanning you can purchase the software to recover. As for the software install it, open it and scan the G drive. What more instructions do you want?

Is there some sort of adapter for a sandisk Ultra CompactFlash 4gb, that i can use to put picutres on my computer?

The device:
Belkiin Universal Media Card Reader
Can be connected to your computers USB port and will then allow you to move pictures from the compact flash card to your computer.
After you connect the device and insert the card you will see a short delay and near the bottom right corner of the screen a message will appear letting you know that windows is setting up the new device. Moments after this completes you will see a new window popup asking what you would like to do with the media card. From the list select move pictures to my computer with the Scanner And Camera Wizard. During the move it will remove the pictures from the card and give you more free space for pictures if you click the checkbox labeled Delete Original Pictures.

How to delete images off a sandisk extreme 3 2.0gb compact flash%3F

Pop your memory card into your card reader, wait about 15 secs and it will appear on your computer as a drive. Double click on this drive and you will see either a lot of icons corresponding to the photos on the card or a lot of thumbnail pictures of the photos. Again right click on the drive and click on select all on the popup box. When all the icons or thumbnails are highlighted left click on them and the click on delete on the next popup box. Whatever you do DON'T try to format the card with your computer. If you want to format a memory card for a camera always use the camera's format function to do so.

By the way, the photos can also be removed by using the delete function in your camera's menu display.

Make sure the record inhibit tab on the memory crd isn't activated. If it is you won't be able to delete anything.

My card won't work on my computer, what is wrong?

When you format the card, be sure to do it in the camera, as the camera firmware writes hidden files to the card.
When you insert the card into the card reader, be sure to set write-protect, so the contents cannot be corrupted.
I suspect what may have happened is that at some point there has been a conflict between files written to the card by the camera and the computer.

Instead of connecting via the camera, just use a USB card reader and put the CF card in that.

Card probably became corrupted. Try running a Memory Card Recovery Program. If that doesn't work take it to a place that'll do that type of thing professionally, a lot of electronics and computer stores do this for a small charge.

Internal memory??

Highly recommend that you consider using a card reader to download you pictures. You insert the camera's memory card into the reader, and then insert the reader into a USB port on your computer. The card then shows up as a hard drive so that you can simply copy/paste or drag your picture files onto your computer. Card readers are much more faster in downloading pics, do not require the use of your camera's batteries, and provide much more reliable downloading of the pictures (fewer errors). They're also VERY inexpensive these days. Here are some examples of CF card readers from Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/s/qid=1223745821/ref=sr_st?keywords=cf+compact+flash+card+reader&rs=172282&page=1&rh=n%3A172282%2Ck%3Acf+compact+flash+card+reader&sort=price

Also, if the card has somehow become corrupted, take no more pics until you've recovered the photos. Take the card out of the camera. Here's some freeware photo recovery software that should be what you're looking for:
http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/recovering-those-accidentally-lost.html

You will also need to use a card reader with this software. Finally AFTER you've recovered your photos, recommend formatting the card IN YOUR CAMERA to prevent this from happening again. Note that formatting will totally erase your card. Turn on the camera, press the menu button, select the tools menu. Go down to the selection that states your CF card's memory capacity and select it. Then follow the formatting prompts.

Help...it want my pictures!!

I have a SanDisk 8G SD card that worked in my camera, but my card reader would not read, so I could not put the on my computer. I put the SD card back in the camera and could still view all of my photos, so I ran a cable from my camera to the computer (one end of the cable was USB and the other end was something smaller that would fit into the port on my camera, I don't know what it is called). The computer was able to read all of my photos through my camera, so I downloaded everything through the camera to the computer.

Sony dsc s500 and a sandisk 4gb ultra II memory card problem

There is no way to do that since the internal memory is designed to only output to cards, not the other way around. Fortunately, this should not be a problem.

In general, the best way to transfer photos to your computer is to use a card reader - it provides a standard interface that the computer will recognize, it saves wear and tear on the camera, and it saves batteries.

I use Meritline.com for things like this because they are cheap and reliable, but please don't think there aren't hundreds of other places to get one from.

To help you, here is a link to the page at Meritline that lists card readers. Note that many have free shipping:

http://meritline.com/readers.html

This is a relatively cheap one with free shipping that will handle just about any card form factor except compact flash:

http://meritline.com/all-in-one-card-reader-black-transparence.html

Good luck.
