Sounds like the hard drive is faulty. A clicking noise would indicate that the drive's heads are failing at reading the disk (thus retrying again and again). And of course, while this happens, your computer is waiting for the disk to respond (so you experience a long period of time where the computer doesn't respond as well).
If the disk is still under warranty, you can (and should) have it replaced. Hopefully you have a backup of all the important files in it.

If your hard drive is displaying any of these symptoms it is important to stop using your drive immediately, Ongoing use of a drive with these symptoms will result in irrecoverable damage being caused to the media.
  • Hard drive producing a clicking sound.

We understand that your problem is:

About 2 days later I went to change my bed sheets and the external hard drive feel on the floor. Now when I connect it to my computer it makes a connected sound but it does not show up on my computer but it is recognized when I safely disconnect it from my computer. I tried it on my laptop, it installs but its the same, it is not detected under my computer so therefore I am not able to access my files. Please tell me what I can do to retrieve my data. 1tb external hard drive wont appear in my computer

Have you "Formatted" it before you used it, If NOT, Right Click on drive and select "Format" format NTFS. After this you should be able to use the drive as normal. Also Right Click, MY Computer, choose "Manage" when it comes up select Disk Management, and you can initialise it and format there.

Have you downloaded another prog recently, about the time you lost the HDD?

Have you pulled the usb restart poota, wait till fully setup, reinstall usb, it just might plug and play.

If not, you will have too re-install from install/setup disc.
