Question about Sony Computers & Internet

1 Answer

Information/Background: ======================= My Sony PS3 is connected to 100Mbps port on 2Wire Router 5012HV. The GigaBit port on the same router is connected to TP-Link Power Line Ethernet Adapter to a power point near the router. Another TP-Link Power Line Adapter in another room is connected to an 8-Port Gigabit Network Switch. I have a Synology NAS and couple of PCs connected to the switch. Basically, I extend my network into other rooms using Power Line Ethernet Adapater pair. Previously, I had 2Wire 2700HGV and the same was replaced with 5012HV recently when I moved to Fibre Broadband. I was able to stream movies from Synology NAS to PS3 without any issues when my router was 2Wire 2700HGV. However, I can stream movies only ONCE after power reset of 2Wire 5012HV router. If I power off and on my PS3, then I'm not able to stream movies until I power reset my new router. Can anyone please explain what's the issue and how to fix it? It works well with my old router but not with the new one (unless I do power reset).

Try disabling plug and play on the router and see if that fixes the issue

can you ping your ps3 from any of the pc's? After it is turned off and on? If you caant i would try setting a static ip address for the ps3 instead ?

I assumed , forgive me if i am wrong, that as you have the networking setup the way you have, via powerline ethernet adapters and a router and switch that you would know how to switch off plug and play. You need to enter the router config menu and under settings untick plug and play. The fact its on makes adding network devices easier as the router will handle the setup of them by querying them to find out what they are, but in some instances they dont connect properly and result in conflicts. I would also try pinging the ps3 and seeing if you can contact it over the network

Turning off PnP did not help. I can ping PS3 and all other devices connected to this router. Setting static address to PS3 and/or NAS also did not help.

But, I found a way to get this setup work ... I just introduced a NETWORK SWITCH between the 2wire 5012NV Modem/Router and all my other devices including the PowerLine Ethernet plug. I can now stream media from my NAS to PS3 ... and all is well now!

As the same setup worked well with previous 2wire 2700HGV modem/router, my testing and results prove that new 2wire 5012NV modem/router has some problems in dealing with network protocols specific to DLNA standards. The vendor says that the problem will be fixed in next router FIRMWARE upgrade ... but, I don't think I can trust these folks.

Thanks scousemartin for sharing your ideas.

How can I hookup lan printer to the 2wire connection?

If the 2WIRE only has one Ethernet port, you're stuck, until you purchase a router, and connect the router to the 2WIRE, and connect your computer and your printer to 2 of the 4 ports on the router.

How to install to att 2wire 2701hgb modem router

Plug power cord into back of modem and then into an electrical outlet. At this point you should see the lights on the front of the modem beginning to come on.

Check the front of the modem for a solid green DSL light. If the light is still blinking, allow a few more moments before proceeding to step 5. A blinking DSL light indicates a break in the network and will require the help of your service provider if it does not turn solid green.

Open your internet browser and type the default gateway into address bar. The default gateway will be provided by your service provider. Newer model 2Wire modems automatically direct you to the installation instructions when the browser is opened.

Click on "Run System Setup Wizard" in the lower right-hand corner. It may require the system password. This password will be provided by your service provider.

Select your timezone and click 'Next.'

Enter your ISP provided login information and click 'Next'. This should authenticate your credentials on the network and complete the installation.

Router only seeing 100mbps on a wired connection

That would be the correct speed unless it is a gigabit router and you have a gigabit adapter. Otherwise the maximum speed you will get is 100mbps. Odds are your internet connection is far less than this anyway and will not impede your throughput.
Hope this resolves your issue.

Hi I would like o hook up a netgear prosafe 8port gigabit switch to my pc and run an ethernet cable which is allready hardwired to my sony bluray player so I can enjoy netflix

It would be much easier to use a simpler device, namely any Netgear 10/100 wireless router.

Cable-modem (or DSL-modem) --> Router's WAN port

Router's LAN port #1 --> your desktop computer
Router's LAN port #2 --> your Sony player
Router's wireless adapter --> your iPod Touch's WiFi adapter

Since the cable-modem (or DSL-modem) is only delivering 5 to 25 Mbits/second to your router,
unless you are paying a _lot_ of money per month to your ISP,
there's no need to buy/use expensive "gigabit" equipment.

So ever since I got my PS3 it failed to connect to the Internet(Wireless). I Unplugged every thing and reset the router, and still no luck. Need Help please!

Hi there,

The problem is the router. If it cannot find a wi-fi signal then your router isn't broadcasting. You'll need to set your router to broadcast if this is the case. If it finds the signal but doesn't connect to the Internet, then there's a problem with your router's WPA / WEP security key, or a problem with the port ranges when connecting to the Playstation Network.

This can be fixed by port forwarding your router to allow the PS3 to push through it's firewall. Information on doing this can be found at Just select your router, select the Playstation Network, then follow the step by step instructions.

My connection through my 2wire pc port phoneline is extremely slow, the internet is very laggy, yet all the computers connected directly to the router through ethernet cables are very fast

This is because the adapter is ONLY 10Mbps you need a higher one 100Mbps or even 1000Mbps... That adapter is too old to be used on a high speed network, replace it with a faster one.

Can I use 2WIRE 2701HG-B router in COX internet connection

No. A router has 2 main interface types WAN (for the internet connection side, and LAN (for the home network side) the 'LAN' side often has up to 4 ports and wireless connectivity for the home network.

The most common routers available at electronics retail use a CAT-5 connection for the WAN ports and the LAN ports. Your DSL modem/router uses a phone line input for it's WAN port, which uses a signal type that is incompatible with the cable modem output.

If COX doesn't offer a router with the cable modem package, you can go and purchase and common brand of home networking router, and attach it to the output of the cable modem.

Modem to router to hub to wireless

What you can do is test the PS3 while wired to the router first. If that does not work you may need to forward ports on your router so it will allow the PS3 to accept connections through the router firewall.
