Question about Computers & Internet

When I turn the laptop on I get a message"HP BIOS update 512/512. States you must let it update and will take a few minutes. After completion it will not turn off, or let me out of the screen; and I cannot turn the laptop off; even after holding the start button. This has happened 5 times now and each time I have to unplug and let the battery run down. How can we stop this from happening? Thanks!

Hi kenneth_whin, to see if you can fix the problem.
"Try doing a "System Restore."
Click on the "Start Button," When I turn the laptop - paul7of9_50.jpg from the Desktop.
Next, click on "All Programs," scroll to find "Accessories."
paul7of9_119.jpg "Open the "System Tools." "
Choose, System Restore."
A 'scan will start to look for, "Last known time of a change in the Computer.
paul7of9_52.jpg "Choose to 'create a date' ie: "HP BIOS Update."
Important!: The System restore can take a {1} hour to run!

!Warning: Do not 'touch' the [Keyboard] for any reason."
Let the (Restore) run it's configurations.

"Choose the Date "closest to the time of the 'occurrence'.

Or, go back to a "Date," before the " HP BIOS Update!"

Now, click on the [Next] buttonWhen I turn the laptop - paul7of9_121.jpgbr />paul7of9_121.jpg "There will be a message,
"Do not "Turn- off the computer."

!Warning: "Use AC Adapter "only" when 'running the program."
The computer will then; "Shutdown and Restart."
"Lo-gin" if you have to; but!
!Attention: "Do not touch the Keyboard once the Desktop 'window' opens.
"Because the {System Restore}, will 'still be running.'
Wait! Until there is a *message:
"Restore of the 'system' was successful!
Important!: "Take a 'moment to rate the help', so I can get 'credit' for the work.

Thank you!" paul7of9

This 'comment' is for FixYa! So my understanding is; -10 is {subtracted} for "Not Helpful: Solutions!" But! When the "Solution is Very Helpful! = 5 or < LESS!" ? Is this "Correct"!? I have another ?Question? Do a number between a (100 to 1000) people respond quicker, and more to "Solution that do not help!" In comparison to the "Solutons that do?"

ACPI is the reporting system for the hardware. It tells the operating system about battery charges fan speeds and so on depending on the model.

I would look at the Asus support page for a bios update as well as updates for the ACPI system or software. You can download and just run the updates to install and that should fix this if they have a driver problem and a fix.

http://usa.asus.com/Eee/

Select your model to go to the model page then under downloads you should find the bios updates and the bios utility. Download and run and it will update and hopefully kill the error. I saw 4 updates and two looked like they might address this. Just get the latest one. It will tell you if it needs to be done. Don't run anything else when you do this. Start the update and don;t touch. It should take just a few minutes and may want to reboot after.

You might have another part that has gone bad. Check the RAM and see if it gives you any problems.

There is a program call mem test that you can burn to a CD and test your memory. But if your no longer able to get to the bios:
you def had a hardware problem.

Hp bios related problem....need help

Please check your ram first. Then after that you'll need to check your battery as well. Locate the bios battery, remove it and leave it outside for few minutes and again reinsert it. Also you'll need to check the Display card. Good luck.

Update BIOS for memory upgrade

You cannot change the memory settings in BIOS. All you need to do is go into the bios screen. confim that it has seen your new memory and "save and exit" If it is not showing your new memory try removing and reinstalling the memory confirming it is installed correctly. it should just see it.

HP Presario V2000 Laptop Turning off after a few minutes on

Sounds more like the CPU is over heating. This is a fairly common fault on laptops after dust hair etc build up in the fins of the heatsink from the cpu.
After it blocks up, the fan can not push air through it to cool the cpu down and so the laptop goes into thermal shutdown to protect itself.
