No light or lights were visible on my ps3 joypad when I plugged it in or when I used it as a remote device. I borrowed a relatives joypad that was definately working on his machine but although the lights came on this time when I plugged it in they didnt turn off and reduce to just one light which is what is supposed to happen. I tried it in more than one usb port but still no joy! I have tried reset button at the rear of the machine but nothing.any ideas?

Make sure the controllers are plugged into the PS3 for initial use. Are the red LED lights flashing/lit. If not the battery may be dead. Can you borrow a friend's controller to make sure the controller ports are working correctly?
My soundbar won't power up. So I pull the battery out of remote, press a few buttons, put the battery back in and all of a sudden the device can be powered up and controlled. Until next time it stops responding. I replaced that original battery with a new one but the problem still persists.

Its the very middle button on your playstation remote. If its saying press the ps3 button on your control its possible your ps3 is not frozen but your ps3 remote has just turned off..
Press the very centre button and check the lights on the top of the joypad. Are any lights lit solid? Once the light comes on solid the controller is active. If these do not light youll need to charge your ps3 remote with the usb cable that came with the ps3.
Also if your ps3 remote is lit for number 2, hold down the ps button, very middle for about 5seconds. Should have an option for reassign controllers, select that and put your controller to number 1.
The wheel should be plugged in and powered up before turning on the PS3. While booting the wheel should go through its full range of motion and the horn button light will stop blinking and stay on steady. If the light doesn't stop blinking the wheel failed to calibrate and is probably defective. I had to exchange mine and did end up getting one that worked this time.
PS3 is one of the most amazing gaming device but like other competitorgaming devices (Xbox and Wii) It also has some problems like Freezingup. You may check out the informative Article at ezinearticles Remedy for PS3 Freezing up
Sounds like you need to format your hard drive, if your system will not let you do this you may need to remove the drive and either use another PS3 or connect it to your PC, the PS3 uses a SATA drive like the drives found in laptops, it is formatted to FAT32, if you need to back up data you can either use an external memory device connected to your PS3 and use the backup option in menu or if that is not possible due to tech problems with the console connect drive to your pc and copy all data to a folder, please remember that the drive is FAT32 if you format on your pc, the best way to connect the drive to your pc is with an external HDD case, borrowing one rather than buying would be a good option, anyhoo so either way you have formatted your drive you replace it and now the system should say it is formatting again this is fine just let it do its thing, if you want a stable way to update visit the official site and download the latest updates for the PS3 and place onto an external memory device and connect to the console and update from there. I hope i have atleast shed some light on the problem if nothin else good luck and be lucky :)
