I have a LG refrigerator, freezer on the bottom, about 10 months old. it has started making a grinding sound that sounds like a motor running down, then it stops. this is happening a couple of times an hour. i am not using the ice maker. this happened once before and then stopped. i don't know how to fix it and the sound is annoying as hell! please help (everything else on it works fine). also no water dispenser on this unit . this is a stainless unit, not sure the product info is accurate

Tale cover off the rear of the inside of the freezer and see if you have ice build up hitting the fan. This would indicate a defrost problem.

There should be screws on each edge holding the panel in.

  • thecalmthelo Mar 14, 2011

yes. i can't reach them b/c of the shelf. if i can see the ice, is this a problem that requires a service call? i can see the ice on the wall itself, w/o removing the panel. thank you.

The coil which is iced up is behind the panel and the heater and thermostat are also there. If you want to try fixing it yourself you probably can. There seems to be a problem with this site because I don't seem to be able to post the directions for your. Try a search for defrost problem.

The refrigerator make noise. It seem to be from the motor. It is only 1 year old.

I think that sound come of the fan in the freezer. This sound is intermittant. It's possible that problem is cause by a defect bearing?

if the temp has risen, check and make sure its not stuck in defrost mode,if it is advance the defrost timer ahead so the compressor again starts and runs, the only other thing would be the motor that you said is slowing down is getting noisy bearings and make that grinding sound, the gurgling noise could be just freon/refrigerant moving through the evaporator coils in the freezer

It sounds like your evaporator fan motor, they last about 4-5 years. Try to see if the buzzing noise comes from the motor, usually in the freezer compartment behind a vented cover plate

The freezer is usually cooled by the compressor, the fridge is then cooled by an evaporator fan motor ($30). If this fan seizes or slows down then the fridge warms up (it sometimes starts squealing before this happens). It could be that your drain hose is clogged or frozen. Maybe the temperature adjuster go bumped.

If you think it is the evaporator fan motor:
Check to be sure you can get a replacement fan first, they last about 4 - 5 years. Can get from a parts supplier or electric motor company.
UNPLUG fridge. Located usually in top of freezer behind a vented cover plate. Remove cover, remove screws holding fan in, may have to cut wires. Replace with new motor, make sure the fan pushes air into the freezer area and doesn't spin backward drawing air from the freezer area.

The sound you hear is the Freezer Fan, this problem is hard to diagnose, because the fan spins but not fast enough to circulate chilled air thru the freezer and refrigerator. The minimum labor and material cost for the repair/replacement is around $300.00. But if you chose to make the repair yourself the motor alone costs around $ But the repair is very labor because the electrical connection for this fan is at the rear of the unit

Roaring sound

I have had the same issues. I have owned my LFX25960 for 18 months. All the cooling, noise, and condensation problems are related to 2 fans. One for the freezer/refrigerator compartments and One for the Ice Maker. The fans, apparently, are not sufficient to move enough air through the coils located behind a plastic panel in the freezer compartment. The part numbers for my fans are 1. Ice Maker 4681JB1029E and Refrig/Freezer 4681JK1004E. It is not impossible, but fairly difficult to replace them yourself. You have to remove the large slide out freezer drawer and glides. Then work the back freezer panel loose from the bottom. Be careful not to break it. It is plastic.
Routine maintenance: Pull the refrig out from the wall and blow-out the coils and fan located on the lower right rear. You might find it easier to do this by removing the cover on the lower, back of the refrig.
