What type of dual core processor can I use for my dc7600?


The motherboard for the dc7600 has an Intel LGA775 processor socket. However, not all LGA775 processors are compatible with the motherboard. For the small form factor, the following CPUs are supported: Intel Celeron D Processors:

Unfortunately, these are old processors and I don't see any available new. Newegg.com lists a couple available as refurbished. You may be better off getting a new computer with either a Intel I3 or current AMD processor.

What is the diff. between duel and quad prossessors


Dual processors have two processors insulated as one processor and Quad processors have four processors insulated as one processor.

In other terms, Dual means two and Quad means Four.

The Processor fan usually runs full speed, when the Processor is sensed to be overheating. BIOS, (BIOS program), determines if the Processor is past it's thermal limit. This is done by sensing the Negative value of a Ground to the Processor. If the negative value is too low, BIOS turns the Processor off. [Thermal Limit: A Processor is a type of I.C. Integrated Circuit. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CPU Electrons passing through the miniature circuitry within the Processor, make heat as they move. (One Electron actually hits another Electron. This activates the motion of Electrons, that is soon to become Electricity. Electrons hitting each other create Friction. Friction causes heat) A Processor can only run so hot before it burns up. (Literally in some cases. As in....... On Fire) There is a limit set as to how hot the Processor can still function correctly, and what is the maximum safe limit before the Processor's instructions, starting breaking down. This is the Thermal Limit ] As the heat builds up, the Heatsink, and Processor Fan, cool the Processor down. Helps to keep the Processor, well below it's Thermal Limit. [ The Processor's fan can sit on top of the Heatsink, or it can be a front case fan pushing air through a plastic tuned port, to the Heatsink. Your processor fan is sitting on top of a Heatsink. A typical Heatsink/Fan combo, http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3451342&CatId=493 Typical construction of a Heatsink, is a flat plate of metal with tall, thin fins protruding from it. Heat is absorbed by the plate of metal, and the fins absorb the heat from the plate, where it is radiated away. Your Processor fan is sitting on top of a Heatsink, which is sitting on the top of the Processor's case] The top of a Processor's case, and the bottom of a Heatsink, are not perfectly smooth. An in-depth view shows 'Hills, Valleys, and Pits'. These form cavities, or voids, that are filled up with Air. Air is an Insulator, not a Conductor. Thermal paste compound is used to fill these voids, and transfer heat from the top of the Processor's case, to the bottom of the Heatsink. Thermal paste is a Conductor. A typical Processor's thermal limit, is usually pretty warm. Time, after time of heating the Processor up, has also heated the thermal paste. Thermal paste can dry out, and harden due to this. It reduces the thermal properties of the thermal compound, to a useless state. It is an Insulator now, and not a Conductor. Doesn't conduct heat. Age also causes the properties of the thermal paste to break down. I would suggest taking a look at the thermal compound. It's always a good procedure to clean the Processor, and the Heatsink, and install fresh, new thermal paste. Decent thermal paste averages around $6, but a 'Mom and Pop' computer shop may have a one Processor application, for around $2. [Remember to follow Anti-Static Precautions, BEFORE reaching inside your unplugged from power, computer ]

The Asus PTGD1-LA motherboard, is a Proprietary motherboard, made Especially for HP.
HP's name is PufferM-UL8E

You won't find it on the Asus Support website.

Fortunately, HP listed basic information for CPU (Processor) Support.

When you look to the right of the CPU/Processor heading, you can see it states -
A) Socket LGA 775 (Processor socket)

Looks like this,

775 of them.
The LGA 775 processor socket, has the pins that go up into the socket holes of the Processor.

B) Supports processors with up to a 3.8GigaHertz frequency rate.
3.8GHz.

['Speed' is a slang term for Frequency Rate.
Giga = Approximately 1 Billion
Hertz stands for Cycles per Second.

3.8 Billion Cycles per Second.
Can also be stated as 3800 MegaHertz.
Mega = approximately 1 Million ]

C) Can support Intel Pentium 4 processors with HT.
Hyperthreading Technology.

D) Looking to the right of the Front-side bus (FSB) heading, you will see it states -
800MHz.

This means the Asus PTGD1-LA motherboard will support Pentium 4 processors with,
1) HT
2) UP TO a 3.8GHz frequency rate
3) Up to a FSB frequency rate of 800Megahertz.
4) Use an LGA 775 processor socket.

Now let's look at one example, of a chart of Pentium 4's with HT, that fits these specifications,

See the heading - Prescott (90nm)?
This means the processors in this chart, are based on the Prescott Core, and the 90nm architecture.

(nm stands for NanoMeter. Approximately 1 Billionth of a meter)

Looking at the headings in the chart, you will see Model Number, sSpec Number, Frequency, L2-cache, Front-Side Bus, Multiplier, Voltage, TDP, Socket, Release Date, Part Number/s, and Release Price.

At this point I would only concern myself with the,
Model Number, (If applicable),
sSpec Number,
Frequency,
FSB, (Front Side Bus),
Voltage,
Socket,
and Part Number(s)


1) Model Number:
The older Intel Pentium 4 HT processors did not have a Model Number.
Intel didn't start using a Model Number until later.
Model Number examples start with 517, 520, 520J, and so on.

Look for the sSpec Number, and the Part Number, for the older Pentium 4 HT's. They're printed on the top of the processor's case, and should be listed by the seller.

2) sSpec Number:
Intel brought this out.
Their way of marking a processor.
Another identifier for you to use.

3) Frequency:
The Maximum frequency rate, ('Speed'), that the Processor is supposed to be able to operate at.

4) L2-cache:
The small memory area for the Processor. The Processor accesses this small memory area first, because it operates at the same frequency rate as the Processor.

You can't change it, and 2MB of L2-cache, is the largest size for an Intel Pentium 4 with HT.
Just thought I would include this information.

(Ram Memory is next. Typically, Ram Memory operates at half of the FSB frequency rate. The Harddrive is next)

5) Front-Side Bus (FSB):
The frequency rate that the Processor transfers data (Information) to the Northbridge chip, and back from the Northbridge chip.
More on the Northbridge chip in a moment.

6) Voltage:
Pretty self-explanatory. The Voltage range the Processor will use.
You need the Voltage range of 1.25/1.4 Volts.
(1.25 Volts to 1.4 Volts)

Any Processor (That is Intel Pentium 4 HT, Socket LGA 775), that uses Voltage in this range will work.

7) Socket:
The type of processor socket that the Processor will fit in.
Has to be LGA 775.

8) Part Number(s)
Self-explanatory again.
The Part Number, that is stamped on top of the Processor's top case.

Part Number(s) is listed, because there may be more than one Processor in the Model Series, that fits the same specifications.

If there is no Model Number, refer to the sSpec Number, or Part Number.

The largest frequency rate (Speed) of Processor you can use, is a Pentium 4 HT that operates at 3.8GHz. (And fits in an LGA 775 processor socket)

Barring that a Pentium 4 at 3.8GHz cannot be found, you will know what Processors you Can use.

Scroll across the headings with your eyes, and start under the Frequency heading.

Find the frequency rate ('Speed') you wish to try.

Go across to the Front Side Bus heading. You should look for a processor listed that has an 800MHz listing.

Look at the Voltage.
All of the Intel Pentium 4 HT processors that fit in an LGA socket, use an 800MHz FSB, and are in THIS particular chart, fall within the same Voltage range.

Keep the Voltage range in your mind, as you look at the other charts below this one.

Socket.
You know you need a processor that fits in an LGA 775 socket.

Look at the chart below this Prescott Core (90nm) example.
Prescott 2M Core (90nm)

Use the above criteria above in this chart.

I wouldn't recommend any Pentium 4 HT's, in the Cedar Mill (65nm) chart.
It isn't that the architecture is smaller (65nm), but that the BIOS program,and version on your motherboard, may not be able to handle these processors listed.

I also do not see a BIOS update for one, and for two, if you make a mistake when performing a BIOS update, your motherboard becomes an expensive Frisbee, or doorstop.

You also do not want any of the processors listed under the Pentium 4 Extreme Edition heading.

Northbridge chip.

1) The Northbridge chip, and the Southbridge chip make up the motherboard chipset.

(Does not apply to the new motherboards that support the Intel i3, i5, and i7 Core processors)

Integrated Circuit.

The Compaq Evo D510's motherboard has a Socket 478 processor socket, and uses an Intel 845G motherboard chipset.

This is information on the Socket 478 processor socket,

478 socket holes.

Only Intel processors that fit into a Socket 478 processor socket, can be used.
Intel Celeron or Pentium 4.

Motherboard Chipset:
The motherboard chipset consists of the Northbridge chip, and the Southbridge chip.
Chip and Chipset are slang terms for I.C.
Integrated Circuit.

The Northbridge chip handles the high-speed processes, while the Southbridge handles the low speed processes of a computer.

The Northbridge handles the Processor, Ram Memory, and any high speed graphics.

(AGP and PCI Express being high-speed graphics.
Any graphics adapter card inserted into a PCI slot, or Integrated Graphics {On-Board), is a slow speed process. Handled by the Southbridge chip)

The Nothrbridge chip is the Intel 82845G.
The Southbridge chip is the Intel ICH4.

As you can read looking across, and at the top of the chart, the 845G will support processors with;

1) Celeron, Celeron D, and Pentium 4 processors.

2) Up to a 533MHz FSB. (533MegaHertz Front Side Bus)

(Pentium 4 processors are better than Celeron.
The Celeron was designed as a budget processor.
'Celey's' generally have half of the L2 cache, that a comparable Pentium 4 has)

I felt listing this information in this manner, would help you can make an informed decision, as to what processors are compatible with the Evo D510 motherboard, instead of just stating, "Get this processor".

I will include a link of a website I found some time ago, that sells Pentium 4's with these parameters, at a very reasonable cost.

You can't upgrade processors in laptops due to Voltage issues, with the exception of some of the newer AlienWare Laptops. So, no it wouldn't be possible. See, slower processors require less power, to put it into simple terms, and newer, faster processors require more power. While most laptops are sold with their BIOS locked, unabling the user change to any BIOS settings.
