Gateway DX4200-09. Every couple of days the screen freezes and I have to manually power down. Sometimes it boots up right away other times it takes a couple of tries. What is going on. Is it overheating.

It will be one of two things, you may have a bad stick of ram, or hard drive issue. Before you power up the system remove one stick of ram, failing that! swap out the other, "remember to put the first one back" If the ram checks out, the next step is check the hard drive for a virus, "scan system" bad sectors on the hardware, "go into my computer, properties, select tools, and the check now button, this will check the volume for errors. If nothing shows up you will need a computer tech to take it further for deeper testing.

I have looked up your computer and it has an AMD Phenom X$ 9100e processor 64 bit and, ATI Radeon 3200 Hybrid graphics. I would definately say the update to your system should fix your problem.

The link is for your system with an address:http://www.gateway.com/systems/product/5...
I'm pretty sure you can update your driver at AMD's sute which I will give you with my best guess as to which update it is but it has AMD processor and ATI graphics. I'm almost 100% positive an update will fix your problem. I'll be back.

If you have an original install cd for your motherboard/garphics, I would try uninstalling original software and then reinstall. If this helps then it is your software. The absolute best palce to get new updates is from AMD.

sounds like your system is booting up and running due to the hold power shutdown procedure. you might try replacing the video card or adding one if your video is integrated.

My Gateway 838GM keeps freezing up

When you do get the pc to start do a disk cleanup, by right clicking the c: drive and going into properties in my computer and put a tick next to all of the boxes and hit next to delate them all. Once that has finished defrag the drive, this can be found in the start bar, programs, acessories, system tools. When that is finished go to start bar in the run or search text bar type cmd to open a command prompt window, and type chkdsk c:/f and press enter, it want do anything straight away and will ask you if you would like it to start it the next time the computer boots type "Y" for yes and exit the command prompt. Before restarting the system goto my computer, c: drive , windows , then scroll down until you see a folder named prefetch, open the folder and sellect all, highltight one file by a single left click on it and prees "ctrl"then "A" this highlights everything, hold the shift button down and press delete to delete the entire folders contence, once done reboot the pc. post back if this helps.cheers.

Gateway freeze randomly it just screen freeze

If you can, download Combofix, Vundofix, smitfraudfix, and malewarebytes.

Boot the computer in Safemode, and then run each program, one at a time of course.

If this doesn't fix the problem, then it will at least verify that it's not a virus related issue.

Gateway 831gm not booting. Fans come on but no boot process.

2 questions:
When you say new motherboard do you mean an actual new motherboard or new to that machine, but came from another used model?
When you say you tested the power supply do you mean with a voltmeter/ammeter or put it in another computer and it worked?
I worked on several gateways with similar problems and it boiled down to motherboard issues.
I tested it by replacing the power supply with a bigger (used) power supply and it worked great (for 1 time) and then put the other power supply back in to confirm my diagnosis and yep it wouldn't boot. The next morning I was going to run some virus/malware cleanup and installed the other (known good) power supply and it would not work. I tried all day to get it to boot and it did about twice in a 4 hour period. When it did run it would run great but any attempt to restart it would cause it to crash. No ryhme or reason, it would not fail the same way more than twice. Sometimes beeps, other times no beeps, sometimes it would start up with no video (could hear the Windows starting sounds) other times it would start up normal. I could let it sit and it would start or I could keep trying in sucession and it would eventually start. Some times the fans would slow down from a roar, sometimes they wouldn't. So with a known good power supply that had 150 more watts than the original I diagnosed it as a failed motherboard. But if you have put in a brand new motherboard then I would replace the power supply, because a bad power supply does not mean no power, just not enough power. Please post back and let us know what you find out.

Need to reset display settings

Hi

Take a look at the keyboard and find the FN button on the bottom left. (The letters FN are in blue)

Now look at the F keys at the top of keyboard and find one that has either a couple of monitor symbols or the letters CRT/LCD - again in blue

Holding down the FN key and press the other key, this should change screens between the external and internal monitors. Don't expect an instant change - it sometimes takes a couple of seconds to do the job.

If that does not work then attach another external monitor, right click on the screen and select properties. Now select the far right tab (settings) and then go to Advanced tab and then select Monitor

Here you should be able to change screens back to the LCD of the laptop

My gateway 700 xl doesnt boot

Unplug the power from you 700xl and from you monitor. Try removing the cmos battery and reinstalling it. Then, plug everything back in and try restarting. If it continues to give you the yellow light, you may need to replace the CMOS battery, especially if it is more than two years old.

Another thing to consider is if your power supply is underpowered for the number of external devices you have plugged into it (i.e., cd, dvd, external hard drives, printers, pci cards, etc). Gateway installed very low powered power supplies in their 700xl desktop computers. Usually only around 250 watts maximum.

If you are replacing the power supply with another 250 watt maximum power supply, and you have a lot of external devices plugged in, you may need at least a 350 watt power supply....if your CMOS battery is not the problem.
