1. Using a computer that is connected to the router with an Ethernet cable, launch a web browser. Examples of web browsers include Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox.

2. Visit http://www.routerlogin.com. You can also use the following if the http://www.routerlogin.com does not work:

http://www.routerlogin.net
• 10.0.0.1
• 192.168.1.1
• 192.168.0.1
3. Enter the following default login credentials:

Username: admin
Password: password
4. Click the ADVANCED tab and select Setup > Wireless Setup.
5. The password/key for the wireless network of your router will be on the box on the right side of Passphrase:.
6. Type in a new password of your choice, then click on "Apply" at the top of the Wireless Setup window.
7. Exit out of the Netgear Genie router interface.

That depends on whether you want to set a password to get onto your wireless network or to log onto your router to change settings. Either way, you'll start by going to http://routerlogin.net. A box should pop up asking for a username and password, which if you haven't changed them, will be User Name: 'admin' (without the quotes) and Password: 'password' (again, without the quotes).
If you want to secure your wireless network, which is what I'm guessing you do, select 'Wireless Settings'. Here, you're going to want to scroll down to where you have button options and choose either WPA-PSK or WPA2-PSK. If you have reasonably new computers, go with WPA2, as it's more secure. No harm in starting there and changing it to WPA if one of your computers can't connect.
Selecting one of these buttons should bring up a box where you can enter a password for the wireless network. Standard good-password recommendations stand for this, so pick something difficult to guess, as someone who can figure this password out has access to everything on your network. Don't forget to press 'Apply', or your new settings won't be saved.
Now, when you try to connect to the network from one of your computers, it should show up as being secured and ask for your password. If that's what happened, you're done. Congratulations! If not, go back through and make sure that all of the settings are correct.

On the other hand, if you were looking to set a password for the router itself, you want to go to 'Maintenance' and then 'Set Password'. The dialog there should be pretty self-explanatory. Don't forget to apply the changes.
If you're still having trouble, you can also check out the manual that came with the router, or look up the online version here: ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/DG834Gv4_RMsrc_13Sep07.pdf.

If you are referring to put a custom password for the router itself.

1. open up your browser
2. put in the url -> http://192.168.1.1
3. a username and password prompt appears: input just the password (which is "admin")
4. go to the administration tab
5. input your new password twice.

Not a problem with router but I need to put a security password in place as I think someone else is using my router.

Go to your IP for that router and put it in Internet explorer.

Most IP's are 192.168.1.1

It may let you set a password up, some do not.
