Question about Televison & Video

I HAVE A HITACHI 53UDX10B UNIT THAT REFUSES TO STAY ON WHEN ACTIVATED BY REMOTE OR "ON BUTTON" ON FRONT PANEL. MY WIFE WOULD SIT IN FRONT OF UNIT FOR 30 MINUTES PUSHING THE BUTTON BEFORE IT WOULD FINALLY STAY ON FOR ONE TIME. THEN SHE JUST LEFT IT ON 24/7. WE HAD A POWER OUTAGE AND IT WOULD NOT COME ON AGAIN?

sometimes the screen would also have wavy lines in it. Is this problem associated with this power supply or is it a separate problem?

Hi dapdonanders,

This is an indication of out-of-regulation in the power supply section. This was caused by leaky/dried electrolytic capacitor in that section. It will drop the supply from normal voltage and will disable the unit. It needs a warm-up to make itself stable but the symptom will get worst. Sometimes it has a bulged/dome at the top but not all, it is better that you have a capacitor checker/tester to determine its condition. Your unit will back to normal again if the leaky/dried capacitor is isolated.

If you don't have necessary tools and test instruments, and can't do the job yourself, I would advice you to look for a professional to troubleshoot the problem. Don't attempt to work in the power supply if you don't know the safety precaution of handling it, there some stored electricity enough to hurt you with a little mistake only. Also there some repair shop that can repair the board alone even not sending the entire unit, if you can find one it will charged you much cheaper.

Also check if your unit is under warranty /extended warranty, avail it because the manufacturer of your unit will fix it for free. Don't open the back panel, this will void the warranty.

Hope I helped you.

Have a nice day!

Thanks for using Fixya.

Yes this faulty capacitor has a visual indication in the picture once gone bad, this is one of our reference(clue) to troubleshooting. This will affect the smooth regulation of the power supply feeding the main board, t-con board which produced some abnormalities in the picture like what you have said...

If you are going to send it for repair, the shop will charged you $350 for service more or less depend upon the shop plus parts (usually they charged it as the price of the entire power supply board &150 more or less), but if you are going to repair it yourself the cost of the capacitor is only $5 at the most each...

If you decided to fix it yourself you have to prepare capacitor checker(if not available), replaced all the electrolytic capacitor in the output of the power supply(if no indication of bulged at the top), the affected parts are the ff voltage ratings, 10v/25v/35v. If you find the ratings I've said replaced it all. The parts no is listed in the body itself. It has a voltage and capacitance ratings. Replace with same ratings. try also digikey.com. Upon installing the new cap, ensure that it is fitted in the right polarity to avoid further damaged. Good luck...

How do I aling colors: the red and blue colors are not align making the tv look distorted.

On my Hitachi there's a convergence button on the front panel. Press that button which will give you red & blue lines. You have to use your remote to converge (align) those lines to correct the picture. If the lines won't converge I've been told it could be a bad convergence IC & tech is needed to fix...could be approx $300 to fix.

Is there a Magic Focus function on 53XDF01B?

The correct model is 53fdx01b. There is a mogic focus button on the front of the set. Procedure for Chassis DP05F, DP05, HP11, HP12:
1. Press and hold the DIGITAL ARRAY or CONVERGENCE ADJUST button on front panel.
2. While the button is held down, then press the INPUT or ANT button on remote control.
3. The unit will now be in the DCAM.
NOTE:
1. Proceed with digital convergence adjustment.
2. Remember to save the correction data.
3. Units with MAGIC FOCUS only - Failure to initialize MAGIC FOCUS sensors after saving
convergence correction data will result in a STATIC (+) display when MAGIC FOCUS attempts
to run. The technician will then be required to access the service only switch behind the front
cover to get back into the DCAM to initialize the sensors, since the procedure to access DCAM
without removing the front panel, requires MAGIC FOCUS to be running.
4. To exit, press the POWER button on the front panel.

Yellow and blue color ruins total picture on 50" tv,can't get rid

lupe0112,

I'm no expert, but I think that you have a problem with the convergence of the 3 color guns. I've been working on a similar problem. As a first step, have you tried "Magic Focus?" The Magic Focus button for the Hitachi 53UDX10B is at the left of the small front panel controls that also include your RCA composite and SVideo connectors. Let the set warm up for about 20 minutes (as recommended by the user guide), and then press the Magic Focus button. When you press the Magic focus button, the set will auto align the 3 color guns. If this doesn't fix your problem, unplug the TV for at least 4 hours and try again.
