SOURCE: I can't get the computer to find a cd or dvd, it keeps saying please insert disc - but its already in there.

Your driver(s) may be corrupt. Try this. RIGHT click on MY COMPUTER from your desktop, select PROPERTIES from the drop down menu, select the HARDWARE tab, click on the DEVICE MANAGER button, click on the (+) by the DVD/CD-ROM DRIVES line, RIGHT click the drive that isn't working, (this part may sound scary) select the UNINSTALL option, click OK in the warning box, then restart your computer. On restart, WIndows will automatically detect the deleted DVD/CD-ROM drive and will install the appropriate non-corrupt driver(s). This should solve your problem. If not the drive may be defective. Hope this helps!

SOURCE: Laptop not recognizing CD drive F

Hi,

the yellow exclamation mark, states that the device is not functioning correctly.
options are:-

1:) go to the manufacturers website, and see if you can download a driver for this.
2:) try uninstalling the device, reboot and see if the device manager, finds new hardware, if so reinstall the device drivers.
3:) eject or remove the device, re-insert ( possible dirty-bad-loose Connection.

SOURCE: When I insert a disc

Sounds like your cd-rw drive is bad and you need to get a new one. I have had that issue before. OR the disc could be scratched and it can't read it.

SOURCE: When I insert a disc

Hi moonsimm,

Welcome to FixYa! How is it going?
You did not specify the Operating System you are using, whether Windos XP, Vista, or Windows 7.

Please try the following steps:
Delete upper and lower filters in the registry.
Click on Start
- If you are using Windows XP (click Run, and type REGEDIT and press Enter)
- If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7 (type REGEDIT on the search box and press Enter).
Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
  • SYSTEM
  • CurrentControlSet
  • Control
  • Class
  • {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
  • This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column.

    * UpperFilters
    * LowerFilters
    * UpperFilters.bak
    * LowerFilters.bak
  • If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete
  • After deleting the keys, close the Registry Editor
  • Reboot your computer
  • Open Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD DVD drive is gone.

Hope that helps. Thank you for usig FixYa.

You have formatted the hard drive (containing Boot Manager) using recovery disk 1.
That's why the error message.

Just insert disk 1 again.
Shut down the computer (press & hold the power button for a minute).
Restart.

Follow the instructions that come up.

If it doesn't help, reseat the hard drive. (open the back cover, take out hard drive, reconnect it)
Also you may go to BIOS (tap F1 while booting) and set the cd-drive as the first boot device.

Hope it helps.

Insert DVD...nothing happens...

You might have to open it up (assuming it's a desktop, not laptop) and make sure the cable is connected inside. The power might be connected, which lets you insert and eject discs, but the IDE (assuming it's IDE) cable also needs to be connected.

Hp dvd/rw does not read discs

If the CD or DVD disks you inserted work in some other reader, then your reader is the problem -- even though it is properly connected to your computer, and Windows has the correct device-drivers, it is the "hardware" that is the problem.

When you insert a disk, rotate it to some position, i.e., top-lettering goes in first, and close the drawer. Do you hear the drive start to spin the disk? Open the drawer. Is the disk in the same (non-rotated) position? If so, then the motor that spins the disk is the problem. If the disk does spin, but nothing happens, then it is the "laser" part of the mechanics that is not working.

Replace it.
