Question about Sony VAIO Notebook

3 Answers

I have a sony vaio vgn-cr23g, it is getting frequent and random shutdowns, though the cooling fan and heat sink are dust free, applied fresh thermal grease, reinstalled vista OS through recovery DVD, so also the the in built motion eye is not working and no detection of camera in device manager. Checked the Hitachi hard disk no problem when tested with Hitachi drive test utility, shutdowns in same way with battery and with out battery (direct power), removed hard disk and run on bios only, please note it did not shutdown for long hours, not able to understand except to go for sony centre for reapairs.

I truly believe that the issue here is cooling. Just because a fan is working does not mean that it is working properly. You did all the right moves more than most would do before a shop tuneup. The issue may also be in a device that is getting to hot. Laptop computers are not that good at cooling and these problems as you know happen frequently this is why they recommend a USB external fan plate underneath the laptop when using it. The hard drive could also be spinning slower as well causing more drain and heating issues. All of these things are over a period of time just like a car when it needs a tuneup you just know it.
I would if it were mine of course I know how to fix computers so I would not shop it but I would take apart and completely clean it as well as reload the original software and do a fresh install. Then get a lap cooling fan for when I use my lap top. Also making sure that the thermo paste is not to much as well. So just be aware that this is a common problem with most laptops these days. They are working on better cooling solutions in the future. You plan to take it in is a good one I suggest it is time for this tuneup a lot cheaper than having to buy a new laptop from cooking the unit from lack of good working parts. Thanks for using FixYa! please place a vote for me. Have a great day! John

There may also be problems with memory (RAM). It should also try to test the memories and other memories. ie those of other manufacturers.

Overheating When the CPU overheats then it will shut down (i.e. thermal overload) and won't boot up again until it has cooled down. If this is the problem is not fixed then the CPU will eventually fail.
A faulty fan causes the problem or the fan and heat sink assembly are clogged with dust.
Check the CPU fan to see if it spins freely, if not replace the fan.
If the fan and heat sink is clogged with dust the remove the dust and make sure the vents are clear and dust free. Use a small brush and can of compressed air to do this.

Inspiron 1501 error code 3700:0118

Three reasons a laptop will overheat and shut down:

1. Dust - Dust inside, dust clogging the vents, dust around the cpu and heat sink. Blow out the dust with a can of compressed air.

2. A Fan not working. Take the laptop apart and replace the fan. Just put Dell Inspiron 1501 Fan in the seach box on ebay. You'll see plenty of them at:

http://www.ebay.com

3. Thermal Paste around the CPU and Heat Sink has dried up or is too thin to keep the unit cool. Apply a fresh coat of thermal paste on the cpu and heat sink. Even if you just change the fan, apply a fresh coat of Thermal Paste.

Also you can buy a Laptop Cooling Pad at Tiger Direct for under $15. It plugs into one of the usb ports and the laptop sits on it. It has fans to keep the unit cool.

My laptop Sony Vaio CS 320J is shutting down with out any notice(not proper shut down but poweroff while running) and not booting again for @ least 2 mins. recently this issue started and this is...

Remove the bottom pan to expose the cooling fan, clean all dirt out of the heat sink and fins, and clean fan, next remove the heat sink to expose the processor ic, remove the old thermal grease with rubbing alcohol, and apply fresh thermal conductive compound to the heat sink and processor, "not to much! just enough to cover the critical areas and assemble. In most cases this will solve the shutdown problem.

Sony vaio vgn-cr510e overheating and sutting down time to time what seems to be problem

Either the cooling fan is not functioning properly or not functioning at all, or the heat sink's vents are blocked by dust & need to be cleared.
Another possibility could be that the thermal grease applied to the top surface of the CPU and/or the graphics chip has dried out & needs to be cleaned & new fresh thermal grease applied.

Vaio computer problem

You could have a faulty fan and/or dust clogging the fan and heat-sink assemble. This is the most likely cause of the laptop shutting down. When the CPU overheats it goes into thermal shutdown and if this problem is not fixed, eventually the CPU will fail.
Check the fan to see it it spins freely and check if the fan works when the laptop is powered up.
If the fan and heat-sink is ok, then to give the laptop addition cooling then purchase a laptop cooling pad and place the laptop in this pad (These pads have cooling fans and helps cool the laptop).

My Sony CS11 keeps shutting down randomly. Please

There's a very good chance it's a thermal shutdown, caused by dust, lint and hair clogging the heat sink. If you have a can of compressed air, blow some in where the warm air comes out on the laptop (do so from a few inches away at first and see whether dust starts coming out of the fan at the bottom, so that you don't force dust deeper into the case). You may be able to remove most of it that way. I also masking tape a square of used clothes dryer fabric softener sheet over the fan intake once it's clean (don't cover it with tape) to filter out dust and especially lint and hair - change it when it looks dusty. It really helps.
