Question about Canon Cameras

2 Answers

Just bought eos 550d for a month. I realized that whenever I took photos with aperture of f7 and more there is a big black dot on the upper right of the images. The dot doesn't appear if aperture is f6 and below. Why is this and how to solve it?

My new EOS 550D has this problem. When I took pictures using aperture value f7 and above, a big black dot appears on the upper right of images but none if aperture is f6 and lower. Please help me solve this as I need to use my camera for my trip. To send to service centre will take 3 weeks to get it back.

There is chance that your settings are just off . Set your settings to AUTO and then try taking photos.

You may need to clean the sensor? You can do it your self or take it to Canon Service Center. To do it yourself, Buy a blower from your local camera store - make sure it is the kind without the brush as they could damage your sensor or add more dust to it if it touches. Follow the instructions in you manual to expose the sensor. Hold the blower a small distance away and use the blower to try and blow the dust off. Take a few shots after you've done this to confirm the problem has gone away - if not, then repeat a few times.

If it still fails, then you may need to swab the sensor. Can be a bit nerve wracking for the first time, so if you're uncomfortable with that and the blower couldn't remove the dust then take it into Canon service centre.

In best case cleaning the sensor will solve the issue. But in worst case there may be some dust or other particle inside of your lens and require de-assembling the lens to clean. Unless you are an expert I strongly recommend you not to try it yourself.

Try using Canon's software. Digital Photo Professional that came with your camera. If it works here then your problem is NOT your camera but your computer, usually software.

Practice, practice and more practice. With the 18-55 lens you are going to have to use your feet as zoom too. What you see in the viewfinder should be what you see in the final picture so if you can not zoom in close enough you will need to move yourself closer.
Don't be discouraged it will get better.

It's hard to say if anything is really wrong with the camera. It sounds like you haven't gone through the manual and tried the features as they are explained.

Believe it or not, most cameras come with "factory dust" just waiting to float onto your sensor. Cleaning it is quite easy with the right tools. Google the words..."cleaning a DSLR sensor" and you will find numerous sites that will explain the procedure with pictures and they will list places to obtain the equipment (which is not expensive and once you have it, you can clean your sensor anytime you need to).

Whats the difference between Canon EOAS 550D /Rebel / non rebel? Which is better camera?

Identical Canon models are sometimes marketed under different names in different parts of the world. Rebel cameras are known in America and EOS cameras are known in Europe. For example the EOS 550D is called Rebel T2i in America. They are in fact the same camera they just don't have the same name.

There is no way to enter it on the camera, but some photo management programs like Photoshop Bridge, Lightroom, Aperture, etc have the ability to encode the photo's exif data on import of the photos to your computer automatically.

For Nikon AF 24-50mm f/3.3-4.5D Zoom-Nikkor Lens I need instruction book. Specifically, there are dots side by side marking the apeture selected, left one yellow, right one green, what one is correct and...

The green mark is the index for the aperture setting at 24mm, the yellow mark is the index at 50mm. These really only matter if you are setting the exposure manually and using an external meter. The green mark is the primary mark -- as you turn the ring you will notice that it lines up with a number at every clickstop, while the yellow one is a bit off.

The pull down lever you ask about is the aperture lock. Autofocus film cameras and all digital cameras expect the lens to be set at smallest aperture (highest number). They will give an FEE error if it is not set correctly. When you turn the aperture ring to smallest aperture you will be able to slide the white dot into position next to the orange mark, and that will lock the aperture ring so that it is not accidentally tgurned while using or changing the lens.
