Hello Ron - The two most likely possibilities are that you either did not seat the CPU properly in it's socket (misaligned or bent pin) or that you did not fasten the heat sink properly, or remember to plug the heat sink power connection into the motherboard power connector.

With the heat produced by modern CPU's - without the proper cooling they would melt down almost instantly that's why both Intel and AMD have built in overheating protection which keeps them from even starting if not cooled correctly. When replacing the CPU it is always good practice to apply some new thermal paste after cleaning off the old.

I suggest you try starting the machine with the cover off and see if the heat sink fan is turning. If not that's at least part of your problem. If it is turning I would remove the CPU (careful of static!) and examine the bottom carefully to make sure nothing looks damaged. If it looks normal I would try reseating the CPU slowly and carefully.

In your question you did not say why you removed your CPU. Where you upgrading it to a new one? If so are you sure it is compatible with your motherboard?

Here is a link to HP's info page about your motherboard, including upgrades. Click Here.

It's also a good idea to clear the motherboards CMOS when removing and installing a CPU. The same page has a clear description on doing that.

Please follow the steps as I've presented them below:

1 - examine the info at the link I presented. 2 - make sure the fan is working - If so then - 3 - remove the CPU, examine and if it looks OK replace carefully (It should take hardly any pressure for a CPU to fit into it's socket.) Thermal paste would be nice but there's probably enough on the CPU (unless you've wiped it off) then you would need to get more paste before proceeding.

If that list doesn't help then it's time for a call to HP/Compaq tech support.

Good Luck,
Mikeywaf

Compaq presario a928ca laptop has overheating problem laptop overheats within a minute & we cant put it on table also we need to put some support below so that air can pass below it.

The first thing I would do is open the case and remove the fan and heat sink for the processor. You will probably find a little "radiator" looking device clogged with dust bunnies. Clean it out good with canned air and reinstall it. Be sure to clean the processor and heat sink then reapply heat sink compound. Clean all your fans and, with the case open, power up and look at all your fans. Are they all spinning at full power. If not, replace them. Reassemble the case. You should be good.

Video wont show

This would be caused by several things.
1) bad power supply causing the computer not to start
2) bad video card
3) bad monitor (does the monitor light come on?)
4) other component bad--disconnect them all except the CPU, memory, and video card and see if you get an image.

Turned computer on and monitor instantly goes to sleep, also cant turn off the computer using button.have to use switch on power supply

Try this, unplug everything from the other board except the main hard drive, power connections, and monitor. if it does not come up, remove ram cards, leaving one stick. try again, if it is still bad swap ram sticks. If after all of this it still does not work you have a bad motherboard or processor

Electrical power outage and tried to turn on my Compaq Presario SR1901WM and green light turns on for a second and goes out. Computer will not start up. I reset the surge protector but it is still...

FIRST DISCONNECT THE PC FROM AC!!!! Try the next- disconnect ALL PERYPHERIALS- mouse, keyboard, monitor, pull out the RAM board(s) and switch on the PC. If still the same, pull out the PCI boards- video card, modem, audio, TV, whatever you have and try again. If it turns on, that means that one of the disconnected perypherials is damaged, put in one by one to detect which one is burned. If still no, change the thermo paste between the CPU and the cooler with a new one.

I don't know any processors that would be compatible with my Compaq Presario SR1810NX and I'd like to upgrade it. Any help would be appreciated!

The mother board will support any Socket 939 AMD Athlon X2 Processor upto the 4800+ model.

However Socket 939 Processors were discontinued so you may have a hard time finding a "New" one.

How to restore campaq sr1901wm with out a disk?/ i was told with a network key for this compaq i could use the restore disk from a gateway

You can use almost any restore disk to restore the operating system, but you must have a product key for that specific version of windows. Even then, it might not work if the manufacturer has coded that version of Windows to be one of their product keys. Also, even after you do restore the system, you will have to go to the HP (HP bought Compaq) website to download the drivers for your system.

Dark Screen

The back light is bad in your monitor. This is the light source that gives light to the image on your screen so that you can see it. This is a common thing to go wrong with a laptop. You can take it to someone to be repaired or if you are handy you can buy the part and replace it yourself.
