First, check the AC cord where it plugs into the AC adapter. Sometimes it gets loose there.

If that isn't it, take the battery out of the machine and see if the machine will power on when just connected to AC. If so, try putting the battery back in.

How to remove lenovo R61 thinkPad POWERON PASSWORD

THINKPAD BIOS AND POWER ON PASSWORD
The BIOS password is configured from the BIOS setup and this password is stored on an 24RF08 EEPROM chip. There is no backdoor password available and IBM/Lenevo support says the motherboard needs to be replaced. Also removing the BIOS battery to discharge the BIOS and reset it to the default settings will not allow you to bypass this password. This also applies to the Power On Password and the Hard Disk Password. There is a way to crack the password but you need electronic skills, electronic components and several programs plus a working computer to carry out this task. For details on how to do this check this WEB site. http://sodoityourself.com/hacking-ibm-thinkpad-bios-password/

Welcome to Fixya

Try to boot the computer in safe mode. Turn off the computer then turn it back on. keep on tapping F8 then select SAFE MODE form the selections. If your computer wont able to boot to safe mode then you have a corrupted operating system. You need to reinstall windows using the recovery disk that came with the sytem.

Thank you for using Fixya!

Dark monitor

Hello,
If your LCD screen on your laptop is really dark and pressing the brightness function keys does not make it any better then you probably have a failing backlight. This pretty much means, time to either replace the screen altogether or buy a new laptop.
You can get screens off ebay for about $130

I have recently purchased a Lenova R500 THINKPAD FOR MY COMPUTER ILLITERATE HUSBAND. There is a Service and Troubleshooter manual but NO HELP whatsoever for him to learn the basics. Any Ideas?

Troubleshooting is for advanced people;if you want anything regarding comnputer basic, www.google.com is the best way to start. just type what information you want, you get it.It will take time to learn things that are not accustomed since the childhood days.

type "Computer basic" on google search box, voila you know it well.

Regarding service and troubleshooting manual, they never comes handy when you want it to be and they are never meant for computer basic learning.
