The dc28 is locked in the upright position. It feels like it will break if I push any harder. Is there a lock/unlock button?

SOURCE: Dyson DC28 Air Muscle Vacuum that is stuck in upright position

This turns out to be an easy fix.

First, get some graphite lube.

Lay the vac on it's 'face'.

1) On the underside of the vacuum, there is a 1/2" wide 'groove" in the motor housing, that runs up the centerline of the machine. Follow this groove from the front of the machine towards the back. As you follow it 'up' into the machine, the groove will 'end'. Just past this point there will be a small black plastic piece with little 'ears' that is resting in another groove that continues just past the point where the first groove ended. This is the upright position lock that isn't releasing. (I've painted the 'ears' red in the attached photo)

2) Using a screwdriver, or butter knife, etc, gently lift this piece out of the groove. The vacuum head should now easily tilt down like it should.

3) Flip the vacuum over onto it's 'back' and you will be able to see the grooves, now visible on the front of the lower head. Apply the graphite to the smaller (upper) groove and try working the unit in and out of the upright position several times to work the graphite into the locking mechanism

SOURCE: My Dyson will not click back into a locking

Hi,

Try this quick repair and see if this fixes your Dyson in terms of not going in the upright position: This is a frequent problem that we see come in on Dysons. If this doesn't fix it, please feel free to just use the clarification request and let me know this didn't fix it.

Step 1.
Turn power off and unplug the machine.
Tilt the machine backward to a 45° angle.

Step 2.

  • Hold the section under the airway inspection pipe.
  • The black forward lock button must be held down simultaneously, otherwise the valve carriage will not move.
  • Pivot this section upwards until it clicks into place.
  • Release the black button once the valve pipe carriage is moved up into place.

    f5fcc76.jpg

    Step 3.

    • Tilt the machine forward.
    • The cleaner head should now slide underneath the part you have just clicked into place.
    • The machine should now stand upright.

      Hi there,

I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulties with your DC28. The cleaner should recline easily into the vacuuming position when one foot is placed on the cleaner head, and the handle is lowered. If it's not doing this, check the clear U-bend at the rear of the machine for obstructions, as a blockage here could jam the valve carriage, making the cleaner difficult to recline. For guidance on doing this, please see the link to our Support page below:

      http://www.dyson.com/support/help.asp?article=1236&product=DC28-ANIMAL

After removing any blockages from the U-bend, stand the cleaner upright, and try reclining it again. It might be worth using a little more force than usual, in case the upright lock mechanism has jammed.

If this doesn't help, or if you're reluctant to try this, it's probably best if you get in touch with us directly. One of our experts will be happy to run through some troubleshooting over the phone with you, and provide further assistance. You can call us free on 1866MYDYSON - or if you email your details to askdysonUS@dyson.com, someone will be in contact as soon as possible.

This turns out to be an easy fix.

      First, get some graphite lube.

      3) Flip the vacuum over onto it's 'back' and you will be able to see the grooves, now visible on the front of the lower head. Apply the graphite to the smaller (upper) groove and try working the unit in and out of the upright position several times to work the graphite into the locking mechanism
