If it will not hold a charge - then I would say that the battery is weak, old and bad and needs to be replaced. there is also a chance that the charger ityself is not putting out enough voltage to totally charge the battery. use a volt meter to check the charger and see if it is putting out the correct voltage,, if it is at the right voltage - then replace the battery.

Hand vac doesn't hold power

Mostly likely it needs a new power pack, but you could try cleaning off the contacts first. Use a pencil eraser and clean the metal power contact on the charging unit and the vacuum. Then charge it over night. If that doesn't help, charge the power pack.

How long are you letting it charge for? It's also possible the battery is defective, or there is a short in the vac.

Dirt devil doesn[t hold charge

Try running the battery all the way down by letting the vacume run in a corner or another room and even when it stops leave it on for a hour to drain the battery. Then shut the switch off and try charging the battery. Make sure the charger is putting out enough volts by looking at the rated output of the charger and while it is plugged in check it with a volt meter. If it does not hold a charge and the charger is putting out the right voltage you need to purchase a new battery for the vacume

I think the battery is not holding its charge anymore. The red (charging) light does change to green but only runs a few yards on leaving the dock.

You have dead nimh (nickle metal hydride) batteries2_bing.gif.
You will need a replacement. You can test for this by removing the battery and holding the power button for 15 seconds. This will restart the charging cycle as if the battery were new.

Not holding charge

Ok, folks.. I just posted my own problem with the battery not holding it's charge..but, we fixed it ourselves.. take the motor loose from the canister , remove the filter and in the back are two contacts.they are two screws at the bottom one on each side... get out your pencil with a GOOD eraser and clean those contacts!..clean around them both and the contact (silver spot at the bottom) and you're good to go!!
