Go to spotlight, the magnify glass at the top right corner
type in disk utility
select it
from there select the WD hard drive
go to erase tab
choose mac extended journal
click format to erase and format the disk for MAC.
Please note this will make the hard drive viewable for MAC devices only.
if you wish to use it on MAC or PC use FAT as the filesystem format.

check the compatibility of the external hard drive. It might not support Mac. Probabely you external hard is in NTFS format and you need to reformat/re-partition it for using it in Mac OS.

We had a PC that we were using with our drive. The PC died and we just purchased a Mac. When the drive is plugged into the Mac it doesn't show there are any files. What am I doing wrong?

The drive is most likely formatted NTFS. You will need ti install software on your mac such as NTFS-3G to enable you to read and write to the drive. If you need to use this drive for PC and Mac you will to copy all your files to your computer and then reformat it FAT using Disk Utility. Remember to copy all your data from the drive before formatting as it will ease it.

I have a mac Book Pro and have been backing up my photos to a WD Passport external hard drive for several months now. This morning the Passport did not even show up in the finder window. Its' Smartware...

Try plugging into another computer and if that works save all your data then format and try back on your own computer. If this doesnt work start to look into data recovery software. I use 1 called GDB (Get Data Back) which will read a lot of drives information when operating systems wont. Good luck from Scott

My western digital passport 250gb wont appear on my mac mini anymore. When I lug it into a pc it says it needs reformatting, but when I plug into an xbox 360 it works fine! How do I make it work on my mac...

This is due to how the Xbox sees the drive.
The PC only sees FAT or NTFS Files systems assuming Windows. MAC only see's it filesystems. try ftping to your Xbox through the network connection assuming it's a lan connected xbox - login with userid: xbox password: xbox and access the drive. Most free ftp programs work. You just need one that runs on Mac

WD Passport plugged into mac then PC, but no drive letter

Hi

You can either format the drive using the PC or install MacDisk on your PC witch will allow you to view any Mac formatted drive on the PC.

http://siteadvisor.de/sites/macdisk.com/downloads/17329989/

Click the link to download macdisk7.5.7.5 or reformat the drive to NTFS which the mac and PC will be able to share if the need arises in the future.

Mac My Passport Essential Hard Drive 320GB

This could be a formatting issue, a power issue, or, if you use a hub, it may be a latency issue as well.

Mac's, in general, do not recognize NTFS formatted hard drives. Check the drive properties to see how it is formatted. If this is the case, you can try to reformat the drive as FAT32 (using the MAC) and start over. Keep in mind that you may run into partition size limitations, depending on how current your computers are set up.

Some USB ports limit power to 400-500ma per port, the Passport Essential needs a bit more than 1000ma and won't work at all with these computers. Other USB ports/hubs limit the total power available for all devices combined... this is why, in your case, you can use one drive, but not both.

FYI, higher speed devices also tend to need shorter cables due to latency. (Light & electricity travels about 1 foot, or 30 cm, in a billionth of a second; this limits the size of high speed devices. In layman's terms, latency is the Brontosaurus effect, since the head takes a while to talk to the tail.)

To boost power, Western Digital recommends using a 22" USB 2.0 Power Booster Cable (WDCA029RNN) to combine the power of two USB ports into the one Passport Essential USB port--it is also a bit longer than the original 18 inch cable. For all EXCEPT the black Passport Essential drive, you may also the WD Passport™ Power Supply Adapter (WDPS021 for the US voltage version). See Western Digital knowledge base ID 1296 for more on this issue.

Hope this helps!
