How far away are you from your wireless router when your getting 10 mbps?
Please note that wireless will not guarantee speeds of 54 mbps.
It will dramatically decrease the farther away you or how much interference there is between your laptop and router.
Also check if your wireless router is set to 802.11 G mode. if you have any devices that only support 802.11B you will only get speeds up to 11mbps compared to G at 54mbps

This guide gives you the directions for setting up wireless on the Netgear WGR614v7.

Basically enter the routers ip address (192.168.1.1) in your browser. If you router has default configurations, then enter the username as "admin" and the password as "password." Navigate to "wireless settings" and then on that page you configure your network.

The Mbps is all over the place jumps from 54 to 11 to 18 to to 36...why is this. and the internet is slow when this is going on.

MBPS will vary with signal strength. You can usually help by placing router and laptop closer together, maximizing signal strength. If speed is jumping around then connection is not too good.

Netgear wireless router wgr614 not transmitting

Yes changing channel will make a diffeence most of the time for this kind of issue. The reason is there could be multiple routers or interference in that area locking to the same frequency.

My Computer is going toooooooo slow !!!!!!!!!!!!

theres a million things that can interfer with wireless...tin...cell phones, cordless phones and the like..but 11mbps is still really fast and chances are, your internet connection isnt even half that so your speed on the net shouldnt be effected...1mbps is usualy enough to load any website in seconds.
if your PC is slow, not jsut on the internet but in general (starting up, running apps) then its an issue with the pc and not the wireless.
but as a heads up, not trying to be mean, but netgear and belkin are cheap equipment.

I have this unit Netgear 54 Mbps wireless router WGR614 v6

Sorry but to give you complete details is not something that I or anyone can take the time. Go to netgear.com and look in their support section, lookup your router and download the manual. latest firmware is available there as well, there is no drivers for a router.

What is the maximum speed

The speed of that router is 100 mbps (wired) and 54 mbps (wireless). If you have a 1 mbps line, that router is more than sufficient. Your speed will change simply because someone is using the internet connection. Downloading, uploading, surfing, chatting, listening to internet radio, etc. Make sure no one is on, then test it to see what speed you get. Go to www.speakeasy.net/speedtest and select the server nearest to you. It is a very good speed tester.
Good Luck!
