Question about Craftsman 20 hp 42 in. Deck Yard Tractor

1 Answer

I have a 20 hp Craftsman mower that has sat for two years. I did a basic fluid changes: oil, gas., and filter. It was hard to start, but would only run unevenly with the choke pulled fully out and full throttle. I opened the fuel bowl and the float seemed to move freely. I checked the plugs, they looked clean. However, it had no power to run the blades (stall out). It would run strong, when I spray carborator fluid in to the carb. The fuel filter fills up only about 1/2 way and the fuel pump squirts strongly. Any thoughts? Thanks.

I decided to take it in to a small engine repair shop and they fixed it by only changing out one of the two coils; one was firing very weakly. None of your solutions were in the ballpark.

You need to have the carb cleaned or rebuilt and more than likely replace the fuel tank if you have a tank under the seat. That long fuel hose gets gummed up easily when it sits for long periods if gas is left in the tank. This is also the problem with the carb. The gas that was in the carb when it was stored dried out and gummed up the float and needle valves. The cleaner that is added to the fuel tank won't do the job, it isn't strong enough and you can't get enough to run through the carb to do any good.

I appreciate the information. Typically the troubleshooting process starts at the Carb and goes out to other systems. Without being able to test personally we have to start somewhere and sometimes it works out that we aren't right with the first solution. Again, thanks for the information.

Craftsman riding mower starts rides a few minutes then stops

Make sure that when you check the oil that the mower has sat I say for at least 5mins. Your mower might have an oil sencer. If not I think it might be the coil gettin hot and shorting out.

Won't start at all

your air filter could be clogged. Also, you can remove the plug and spray a small amount of starting fluid in and replace plug and see if it starts.

Craftsman riding mower shuts off after approx 20 mins of use.

ran into this problem twice this season, about drove me crazy - finally traced the problem to the anti-backfire solenoid [the little cylinder at the bottom of the carburetor that holds the float bowl on] - after running fine for 20 minutes or so [it varied], the coil would release the plunger and shut off the gas flow. as soon as you turned off the key and turned it back on, it would start back up - replace the solenoid and problem vanished

My craftsman rotary lawnmower wort start i changed the spark plug

a mower will hold 20 oz of oil. however most times it is changed you do not not get it all out. so only 16 oz is needed. if you overfilled the oil. this would cause hard starting. or did you have the mower tipped on it's side for to long, oil can sometimes seep past the piston out thru your intake valve and into your carb as well as destroy you air filter. you might get by with a new oil change and a carb cleaning.

also has this unit been sitting for a while does it have fresh gas. and No water in the tank/carb

Not getting gas to combustion chamber, leaking gas from exhaust

Definitely the carburetor. Take it off and look for something clogged. Look carefully at the gaskets. Look for water and dirt in the float bowl.
