If you have a multi-meter check for 24 vac between OR & W at the board or on the gas valve (OR & W are the 2 wires that go to the gas valve). Check the voltage while the igniter is sparking.

I have an H400 electronic heater. I have power to it but when it is turned on nothing happens. I bypassed (hotwired) all the limit switches and pressure switch and even the valve on the advice of a tech...

If you have 24v coming from your transformer it is ok. Then you need to follow that 24v step by step through the system. You can't jump the thermostat so you have to check power in and power out. So this could be the ignition control but first see if you have the power in and out of the temp control. If this is the problem you should try a temp sensor first as it is cheap and easy.

0. Check the spark ignitor conection to the board
1. Check the water by-pass valve if you have it
2. Check your gas pressure. (5-7"wc for natural gas, 9-13"wc for propane gas)
3. Clean your filter for your water system or remove it and try again
4. Check the Hi-limits on your heater
5. Replace the thermostat

High limits are safty switches to keep the heater from over heating and runing your new exchanger. you will need to check the by-pass inside the water manifold. It could be the problem but hook up the limits in the mean time. As you are aware at this time the exchanger is your most expensive heater part you can buy.

Hayward H400 heater won't light and service light comes on. Also gives a code on screen "AO". I can't find in the owner's manual what that means. It is the electronic ignition model.

This is a code for what is called a prover switch. What it is a circut for the air pressures. Depending on model you can have one or two of these. Their will always be one for the exaust perssure and this will often be the culpret. If the sensor is good a sooted exchanger, rat nests on the exchanger or in the exaust can cause this. If you have a second switch it will be for burner air pressure and you will look for the same problems only inside the burner cabnet. Good luck, I'm sorry I can't be more help. But at least you know to look to the vent system.

Hayward H400 Pool heater will not stay lit

"IF" - Hayward Pool Heater Fails to Ignite: the most common reason for this problem is insufficient gas supply. The Hayward heater LED display will show a diagnostic fault code of "IF" which stands for Ignition Failure. Undetected gas pressure problems if not investigated properly may result in unnecessary replacement and servicing of your Hayward Pool Heater.
